Pain sharing - knives lost to house fire...

...First let me say that my friend, his family and his dogs are all okay.

Whilst, he has some real challenges on his hands getting things sorted out he is working with his insurers to get squared away. A faulty tumble clothes dryer caused the fire. Fortunately, he had just moved the dryer into his garage which is completely totalled. The fire did spread to the main house and the extent of the damage is till being assessed - looks like it'll need a new roof despite the fact that it is still standing.

He managed to save about 70% of his stuff in the house, but lost everything in the garage (except his car which wasn't parked in there!). So to be clear the focus of loss and my prayers remain for him and his family.

That said, whilst I am overseas he was storing almost all of my stuff including my $3000 mountain bike, but thankfully not my motorcyle! As per the title, the additional downside and focus of my (more selfish) thoughts are on my lost knives;

Benchmade: Ritter Griptillian - Satin blade, custom green scales

Blackjack: Necker - Satin blade, natural micarta scales

BRKT:
Bravo Necker 2 - Green micarta scales
Canadian Special 3V - Camel bone scales
Classic Drop Point Hunter - Cocobolo scales
Mini Fox River - Camel bone scales

DPX: HEST 2.0f - Black blade, Green G10 scale (the only one I am not at all upset about!)

ESEE:
Izula - Tan blade, Green micarta scales
Model 3 - Tan blade, Green micarta scales
Model 6 - Black blade, Green micarta scales

Fallkniven: F1 Custom - Zircote scales (my first quality knife - damn I am going to miss that knife!)

Hogue: EX01 3.5 - Satin blade, green alu scales

ZT: 0561 - Satin blade, Brown G10 scale

Fortunately, I had been sneaking more of my collection out each time I went home so I still have more than enough cutlery for one person's needs (to say the least)...

Just wanted to share my pain ;)

Wow I feel for you sir - definitely lost some fine pieces there. Wish your friend the best of luck getting everything sorted out as soon as possible. And I hope you can pick up some new blades to make up for these.

Sorry to hear about your knives, and more sorry to hear about your friend's loss. Luckily no one was hurt. And luckily for you most of those knives on your list are replaceable, maybe not exact but pretty close.

Are there knife remnants to show the insurance company, to prove what you had? What sort of documentation are they asking for?

I hope your friend's home policy has some extended liability coverage which will pick up at least some of your loss. At least, you will have physical proof of loss. I am sorry for all of you, but grateful that nobody was hurt.
I had a house-fire once long ago, and was lucky that everybody got out okay. Now that's just historical data. It can all be replaced, but if loved ones get injured or worse, it's a forever loss.

Thanks guys - you are right to focus on the lack of injury, etc. Just got off the phone with my friend - it is now the morning after. Not going to pester him at this stage about potential insurance coverage of my stuff.

They need to move into a rental house, etc. and get squared away. As I said, my prayers are with them and as you rightly point out Bob W it is just 'stuff' at the end of the day and barring my custom F1 all entirely replaceable.

Thanks again for your wise words...

Best,

Ben

That's terrible!

I hope your friend and his family can get back to where they were before, and I hope that you can eventually replace your stash. However I agree with you that now would not be the right time to ask him about it. If I were you, I'd wait until HE brought it up.

Good luck to all of you.
