Paint as a Blade Coating?

I'd swear I remember the original Becker Knife and Tool (BK&T) blades as being finished in a heavy coat of gray paint.

Anyway...would such a thing be practicle? Would it hold up on a working knife? If so, what kind of paint would be used and how would it be applied? Anyone ever try this?

this is not paint put looks like a flat gray finish, dip your knife in ferric cloride
for about 10 minutes bring it out and you will have a gray matt finish just take scotch brite and hand rub it it looks like it
has been sandblased with out the pits
Jerry Hossman told me about that one
it is a neat finish...

Hey Nathan, do you dilute your ferric chloride with water? Also, will your method work on 440C and ATS34? Thanks in advance.

Scraped, burnt, sliced, smashed. AHHHH, knifemaking!!!!

I have experimented with normal paints as blade coatings. They come off readily in the contact areas during chopping, but then again so do most powder coats.

There was a thead earlier about the type of paint to use to the frame of a grinder. Some of the stuff mentioned there might work ok. It sounded pretty tough.
