Paint the pocket clip?

I am wondering if it's a good idea to take a can of paint to the pocket-clips of my folders, to make them less conspicuous, just in case I forget to put them into the pocket when going outside.

Has anyone had any experience with doing that, in terms of what paint to use, and how many coats?

I am worried that it will rub off onto my clothing, primarily...

No experience and would not recommend it.
If you just have to do it,
get some two-part epoxy from a boat store.
use fine sandpaper to scuff up the surface of the clip.
Clean it with MEK.
Then apply paint.

Good luck.

Best thing I have come up with is to use some 3M Stair Step tape. It is black and it goes on easily and most importantly, it stays. You always need to clean the clip good to make sure all oil is off before applying the tape. Another good thing is that it can be removed without messing up the finish on the clip. The adhesive 3M uses is some tough stuff! I get mine at the local Ace Hardware.

I have painted clips before. You need to scuff up the surface and it doesn't hurt to shoot a coat of primer first. Then I use black BBQ spray paint and cure it in the oven at about 300 degrees for maybe 10 to 15 minutes. Just follow all can directions.
