if I took an oak or other non-stabilized wood handle and painted it with a water-based paint, what protectant would you suggest I use on top of the paint? and why?

I would like the least amount of color loss

all of these lacquers, shellac, varnishes, etc., are kind of confusing

thanks

Habeer, what is the reason for painting the handle?
Would a wood dye work as well?
After dying, an oil finish would protect it well. Any one you like should work.

If you are absolute on using a water base paint, use a water base polyurethane over it. Varathane Ultimate is what I use in similar situations.

the reason for painting it is i found a very unique color here in France and i want to try this concept out

thanks. I will see if I can find an equivalent over here in France.

Any good brand polyurethane water-based finish should work.

I've used Epifane's varnish you might look at that. I liked that it seemed simpler(chemically) than many and respected in the boat world.

I'm not sure that Epiphanes would work over water-based paint. IIRC, it is an oil-based varnish for marine wood.

That is what I thought. Habeer should use a water-based varnish. Try "Enduro-Var II" water-based varnish. It is a European product.

My Google-fu also comes up with these brand names for Europe:
  • CHAMÄLEON
  • San Marco
  • JELT
