painting a bike?

i am considering fixing up a used road bike i picked up for cheap.

i just finished working on my mongoose mountain bike, which was a waste of time and money and produced a lot of frustration.

but the road bike looks promising. i just took it completely apart and inspected the frame, which is in decent shape. all the components are pretty crappy, but i would replace it all if the frame is worth it.

the bike is a "fuji palisade." dunno anything about bikes, really. anyone want to school me as to whether this is a decent brand/model/bike, or if i should just toss it in the huffy category?

and if it IS indeed worth salvaging, does anyone have any tips on painting a bike? good brands, methods? basically, i'm looking to paint it matte black because it's cool and i need to prevent any more rust from happening (it's not too rusty now, but some spots are forming).

ideas?

Look here for info on the bike

As for painting. I would go to the local bodyshop and see if their work looks ok. Then, when you have decided what colour you want it to be ask them how much to spray it when they get a job in that is that colour as they always mix too much 'just in case'. I bet you could get it done for a few beers if you prep it yourself. Chances are too that the finish will be a lot harder than if you did it yourself.

Some guys just slap on some paint with a brush, as ugly and sloppy as they can manage, with the idea of repelling thieves. I don't know if that really works or not, but ugly paint will stop rust just as well.... :)

I wonder how powder coating would be on a bike. Seems like it would be more durable. I would like to hear how your project goes. I don't know alot about the quality of components and such and I would be interested in learning more.

indeed, i've heard that too, cougar.

my mongoose is spray painted right now and probably looks nasty enough not to steal. but who would steal that hunk of junk anyway?

in either case, i still dunno if a fuji palisade is worth anything anyhow.
it's not the "comfort" bike that fuji has in their catalog at fujibikes.com. this bike is definetly a road bike, just of undeterminable age. i emailed a few people at fujibikes to see if i could pull up any info.

thanks for the tips guys.

i'm still looking to do this myself, so i probably will not take it to a car repair shop. anything i can do by myself?
