Hello All,

I am taking a couple of KMG-1s over to Korea by boat. I suspect being on the ocean will make them rust like crazy, so I am going to paint them.

I am just wondering exactly how much disassembling I should do, versus simply painting over bolt heads and the like. How did/would all of you do it in terms of disassembling and also protecting those parts/surfaces that obviously should be left uncovered and freely moving?

Thanks,

John

John,

I'm thinking you want an industrial appliance type of paint. I would go to a Ben Moore dealer and get a quart of something oil based or epoxy based. Make sure you rough up the flats and thoroughly degrease everything.....another avenue and an easier one would be a spray on Rustoleum product but I'm not sure it will hold up as well.

John,

There is a product manufactured under the LPS label that is a type of spray on rust preventor. It reminds me of cosmoline but will come right off with some WD-40. I have a friend that fishes in Alaska and he swears by the stuff. Justy spray this stuff on everything that may rust. Then you can clean disassemble and paint when you get there. I think you can get it from enco or grainger sells it.

Thanks to all of you.

I chose to disassemble the grinders and paint all non-moving parts. They come apart and go back together very quickly and easily.

I actually have two grinders. I went at one with Hammerite and the other with Rustoleum primer and hammer finish paint. The Rustoleum looks much better to me and went on much better and more evenly. The Hammerite didn't need primer, but it spattered and clogged and was generally less pleasant. I can't say which will perform better over the long run.

Thanks again,

John
