I was off today (teachers love summer!!!!) so I got out my six RC/ESEE knives and was playing with which one would pair up with another for a particular task.....this is how it broke down. Hope it helps someone.

The ESEE 6 and the ESEE 3 Clip point.- the perfect do everything combo. (I say this because I do not have either machete....yet.) ( i do have the RTAk...but thats something else.) This combo can handle the suburbs or any semi- rural environment.

Next is the ESEE 5 and the Hest..This is yorur MAD MAX combo. They can survive a nuclear war and still be ready for more. Great for urban movement or real combat.

Lastly is the ESEE 4 and the Izula. I am not great with wood craft but I am learning some stuff and it seems they two are perfect for the woods. Small notching, heavy carving or some batoning these knives are awesome with pine, gum or cedar.

Just one more reason why I love these knives.
ps. If you guys ever make one out of Rearden metal...let me know I will pay double. :)

Why not pair the strengths of one with the shortcomings of another?
HEST + ESEE6, for instance?

That said, your pairings list is like PB&J... good stuff.

If you really want the widest range of performance, yeah you could go with the 3 and the 5, or the HEST and the 6, but to be perfectly honest I think this is overevaluating, and the edges applied to the two in the pair are much more important than factory specs. The HEST and the RC5 are definately the MAD MAX combo-I consider the HEST my EDC RC5-although I find myself applying a thinner and thinner edge as necessity arrises. It has an almost scandi blade going now, the ridge is almost non existant where the edge mates with the factory sabre grind. If you want to get all technical with the most extreme range of performance between two blades a 3 inch, .1 inch thick scandi scandi and a 10+inch beater like the Junglas are probably it, but I find myself preferring a 3.75-5 inch length companion knife with a real full, comfy grip for extended use in addition to a small slicer and a beater. I find myself using the HEST for this application, but it is the exception, as the handle's full secure grip betrays it's blade length and overall length.

Tarditi-I like the idea of being ready for anything by having two opposing blades. If I carried that line of thought through I think I would like the RC5 and the RC3. Although Payette's suggestion of the Junglas would play out even better with the RC3.

Damn I want a Junglas and a 3MIL. I need some canvas micarta!

Really, the 3 and the 6 are a nice little combo. 3MIL and Junglas would be 100% pure win. If I can only take one blade, I split the difference and take my 4.

three and six is a great combo. Was the first esee combo I ran with.

The hest fits great onthe junglas, but I'm more in favor of the three with it.

I'm thinking however, that the lite machete and the three or four may wind up being this summers kit.

Hi All, new to the ESEE forum but no to RC. I actually have the RC-5 and RC-3 thinking I would pair them. For me, not a hardcore outdoorsman (not be choice but by time :D), the RC 3 still seems to big for the tasks I use it for. I usually use the smaller knife for food prep and small detailed work. Has anyone tried pairing a RC-5 or RC-6 with an even smaller blade (2" or so)? Any feedback on how it worked out? Any need for the RC-3 once paired with a smaller knife?

I'm gonna pair my 5 with my 3 once my 5 gets here next week.
Should cover me through thick and thin.:)

For "discretion" in an urban environment I tend to pair the Izula with a HEST or the 3MIL. For the woods I usually go Izula and and RC4 or the RC3 and one of my larger blades...but as of now only because I haven't got the ESEE-6 yet not because I don't like it. I love the looks of it and I think it will likely be my first one with the new logo.
