Pala called this AM about 6:30 and here's the latest news.

He's been watching how the wind blows and now believes due to recent political developments that it's time to build a new factory in Nepal. As some might remember he bought a little plot of land for this a couple of years ago but didn't build because of Maoist activity, thinking things might get so bad he might have to move the operation down to India. Well, it looks like there may be light at the end of the political tunnel so he's building in Nepal. More secluded but still water, phone and electricity available. The kamis are all for it and are quite excited. It'll be a safer, better place for everybody.

Digging for the foundation starts today so there will be considerable cash outlay in the immediate future. To get us thru the short term cash crunch Pala said to continue his Crazy Pala deals until the factory is complete and paid for. So, stay tuned.

I'll try to get pix of the contruction in progress but don't know if I'll be successful.

That's great news for the guys in Nepal. Best wishes on the new endeavor.

Also very glad Pala got through Hong Kong without getting sick.

Best wishes to their joint efforts.

There is nothing like founding your very own business on your very own land. It feels good for all men.

Tell Pala to reserve some villagers for me. That's all I can afford.
From what I heard, those villagers are lean, mean, fighting machines! :D

I'll keep me eyes peeled fer the goodies. Congrats to Pala and all HI folks, especially those over there whose hard work and determination have paved the way for this milestone success!

A good day.

to Pala, and the kamis, helpers, Uncle Bill and everyone else associated with the business/social work/and spiritual generosity of the Himalayan Imports products!

It'll be a safer, better place for everybody.

I hope this is true for each of you/them for all of your lives.

May you fare well, where ever you fare.

Great news on the expansion plans, and good to hear that things are positive enough for people to make some long-term plans again! :):):)

Thanks for well wishes.

The kamis are very pleased with this development. Although BirGorkha is now located in the middle of a field of vegetables there are Nepali Army Barracks just an arrow shot away -- attractive target for Maoists. And, we are only about 100 yards from a very busy bus and trolley stop -- too much traffic and everybody wonders what the factory is doing out in the middle of a field of vegetables. Too many curiosity prompted visitors and too many Maoists lurking around trying to figure out how to blow up the Army Barracks.

New place will be away from everything and if he can swing it Pala intends to build another two story complex -- shop 1st floor and kami/sarki apartments 2nd floor. And, Pala is considering building a small 3 room apartment for himself separate from the main factory but still within compound walls so he'll be on site both day and night.

We'll see how it all plays out. I'm sure there will be unexpected twists and turns.

A note of interest: Most building materials except for bricks, cement, and mortar are about the same price as here but the labor is cheap as you might guess. Example: a master carpenter who will earn $25 an hour here will cost about 3 or 4 bucks a day in Nepal. Bricklayers will run about half that. And the labor force is generally unemployed so should be readily available and very happy to find some work. Remember, under and unemployment combined still runs about 80 percent in Nepal.

I'm betting Pala will opt for bricks but I'll suggestthat he uses cement rather than the mortar -- however, he doesn't tend to listen to me very much.

labor is less, but also slower...
(IMHO, IIRC)

Actually many hands make little work. We will have a pretty hefty constuction crew and they are estimating completion in 6 to 8 weeks.
