Palm V . . . problem with DATE function?

I have used a Palm V for probably 6 years with no problems. Works good and have been completely satisifed. BUT, recently, the DATE is often incorrect after the Palm has been sitting a few days. Battery seems ok and still holds a charge as long as it ever did. Time stays correct but the DATE often loses a day or two and sometimes as much as a week or so.

Anyone out there have any idea how to fix this? Don't mind returning to Palm if necessary. I've gotten used to the convenience and the address/phone book is great, but the lack of reliability in the DATE function is frustrating to say the least. :grumpy:

If you got six good years out of it consider it a good long run. It's probably not worth repairing with what you can get today. I think I've even seen Vx (4 mb instead of 2mb)on closeout lately for $79.00, so if you're really addicted to the Palm OS you can just replace your V.

Or for $189.00 at www.overstock.com you could get a Sony Clie 615C. It's about the same size as your V. It runs Palm OS 4.1 and uses the same old Grafitti that you already know. It has a 33mhz processor, 8 mb of onboard memory and the most amazing backlit color screen. Much better than anything I've seen from Palm so far. It makes reading text so much easier. The fonts are much sharper and it's cool to be able to keep pics of the wife and kids on it to show your friends. It also has a Li-on battery so no memory problems and a Memory Stick expansion slot that will hold a 128 mb expansion card about the size of a stick of gum. There's also a still camera Memory Stick,a GPS receiver and a bluetooth card that will allow wireless internet through a bluetooth enabled cell phone.

For a few dollars more you could get a Clie 665 which upgrades to a 66 mhz processor with 16mb onboard memory, everything the 615 has and adds a built in MP3 player.

I have a Clie 760 which is a year and a half old and does everything the 665 does, but is a little bulkier and only has a 33mhz processor. It's awesome. Besides standard calander functions, I read e-books on it while traveling, play cool color games, listen to MP3s on airplanes, all sorts of stuff.

Hope this info helps. You can also check out www.pdabuzz.com. Forums for PDA geeks much like bfc.

I'd like to second that recommendation for a SONY Clie PEG-T615C. My wife has one and it is an amazing little machine!

Incidentally, the T615C comes with 16M of RAM, just like the T665C. The only major things the 665 adds are the earphone jack and MP3 capability. I carry the 665, but if I'd known about that special at overstock.com I would have bought another 615 instead!

I guess i just assumed that after owning it for as long as you have, you'd already tried a soft and hard reset and the problem was more circuit related.

Be careful though, if you look at the Sony, you will never want to see your Palm again.

Well, I'm retired and the Palm V does everything I need . . . fact is, it generally stays buried in the console of my truck and I dig it out only when I need an address or phone number or need to update the calendar (which happens less often the longer I stay retired :))

This lack of use probably leads to the low battery condition which results in the date failing to update at times. I have noticed the longer I ignore the Palm, the farther behind the date seems to lag.:(
But . . . having the ability to fix it with a reset makes it a problem I can work around. I'm gonna' check on the Sony PDA's and compare notes . . . sure appreciate the pointer and the recommendation!

Even if you never load pictures of the grandkids on it, just to look at a prone number, the screen is so much clearer and is so bright, your retired eyes will never want to see that old palm again.

I don't think it is a battery issue. I've had the same thing happen a couple of times to me and the way to fix it is to reset it. But that's a pain in the neck if you have add-on's etc. that will have to get reloaded.

I've just ordered the latest Siemens Pocket PC phone and will gladly retire my Palm VII that can't keep track of dates.

What you have is a common problem that is the result of a bug in the operating system. It manifests itsself when the Palm is not used for extended periods of time (several days). Resets will not fix this bug, but there is a software fix available. Go to www.rgps.com or www.palmgear.com and search for a program called DayLossFix. Follow the instructions to load this on your Palm and your troubles will be over. If it works for you, you can register the program for $5.

Good luck.
