I just finished a drop point and decided to make a different style sheath than my usual. Anyone ever carreid a knife in one of these pancake sheaths? It seems like this style sheath would keep the knife from flopping around and be more comfortable. Would you buy a knife with a sheath like this??? Thanks for your input!! Michael

Heres a pic of the knife out of the sheath. http://members.aol.com/l6steel/ebay/ray3.jpg

Always think of your fellow knife makers as partners in the search for the perfect blade, not as people trying to compete with you and your work!

L6,
I have a sheath like that for my personal favorite 01 Hunter. The sheath was made by a guy in Woodstock NY that is no longer alive. For me, it adds about 3" to the length of belt I need to wear. Also it tends to push into my side too much. I carry the knife now in one of my own leather pouch sheaths.
You could also make one with only 1 slot in the front of the sheath. The belt going through the single slot and over the top of the sheath holds very securely.
Being slightly big around the waist often makes belt sheaths a comfort problem for me. The design in the picture would put the knife handle right in my love handle

Neil, I made this one with the belt loops higher on the sheath than usual so the knife won't ride so high. Guess I need to buy a belt and try it out myself. lol!

It looks nice, but I don't like sheaths that ride above the top of your belt. I don't think it matters how your built, they poke you in the side.I'm pretty scrawny so it doesn't just bother big guys anyhow

If you don't want the sheath to flop around like a swing sheath. Why don't you try moving the loops for the belt up so they are at least even with the end of the knife's handle. Then layer a peice of 410 stainless sheeting or titanium into the back of the sheath to make it stiff. My friend tried that with some equipment he's designing for his horses to help it stay in place better. It seems to work great.

Fix it right the first time, use Baling Wire !

First, nice looking sheath.

I was wondering today, why someone doesn't make a leather sheath with a wire clip like on one of my holsters. Using the same principle of the gun holster, yet for a fixed blade knife.

Wire clip for what? Slipping over your belt? I have a sheath or two with a clip, and I do not like them. I prefer more security on sharp things, and much more on firearms. Then again, I normally have a coupla tools riding on my belt, so belt loops are nothing new to me...

Wrong question, as you can always get another sheath for the knife, if you like the knife enough and can't buy it without the sheath.

Me, I could consider getting this kind of sheat for a knife I already owned, so it's certainly OK as far as I'm concerned.

I like it very much, Michael. In fact, you've inspired me to try the style for my next small-medium fixed blade leather sheath project.

I have a CR Aviator with a similar style leather sheath & I find it very comfortable. It snugs the knife to my side w/o being uncomfortable, despite my being a big guy. I like the style because it doesn't get in the way when sitting or entering/exiting vehicles like some sheaths do.

I find these sheats fairly comfortable. Once upon a time I carried a .38 derringer in something similar (roughly the same cross-section as a decent sized hunter). I also have a similar sheath (w/ clip) for my Worrell utility- only problem: w/ a kidney/s.o.b. carry, it's a little hard to resheath.

L6,
Handiwork is beautiful. I had problems with the functionality when I built one for my drop point. I carried mine (at the time) closer to the small of my back to the rear of my off-duty carry. Problem is that it looks cool and holds the blade high and tight, but it is a *itch to resheath. Drawing it is cool, resheathing took my partner's help. Actually it was troublesome to reholster my off duty in a similiar "pancake" design. but yours looks great!

Nice job! A lot of stitching eh? The tooling looks nice and even as well, those sheaths look to be pretty secure. I know that Gfeller makes some like that for Chris Reeve.
