Just wanted to share the Plumb hatchet that was in the box of pocket knives and other misc. things I inherited from my grandpa. He passed back in 1979 but my grandma was holding on to all this stuff in her garage for the past 40 years until her passing a year ago. This thing was definitely used! Even has some tar on the handle. I have no idea what my grandpa was using this for, but it looks like he was roofing with it and hammering with it too. I know he built the garage this was sitting in so maybe it was that project. I just wiped all of the old rust off of it and will keep it in this same condition just as papa left it back in 1979. Also in the box was some old pocket knives including his Buck 110 and his Buck 303 Cadet. Those were the gems in the box. ;)

OK, I realize now that the hatchet has a notch for taking out nails. Since he built his garage, there's tar on the handle and the nail notch on the axe head, I now know its use. I smart.

I was earlier considering even wiping off the tar from the handle, but nope! Keeping it exactly how it is. I just wanted to get the rust off, so now I'll put a coat of oil on it and put it in the safe.

Thanks! I cleaned up the 110 and the 303 and they are now on display in my office. I work from home. ;)

The 110 has a slightly bent blade, but not enough to catch on the side of the liners when closing. But enough that the buck snobs would want to straighten it out. Buck snobs, me included. I love my Bucks! But for this 110, I will leave it alone for the same reasons as the Plumb hatchet. Cleaned up nicely, but I still need to polish it up a bit.
