NOT !

Ever since Maui Rob,s post concerning the sterling attributes of Papaya I have wanted to try one . Not the least expensive of fruits I waited till a good price came about and pounced upon my prize . Sliced it in two lengthwise , scooped out the seeds for drying and had it along with two whole wheat toast as my breakfast . As it was I was a bit stopped up in the Colo-rectal department . Since one of the many cures lauded by our worthy friend was natures version of liquid plumber I decided that this was the perfect test .

Nada , nil , no sir , nothing special there . Considering I was supposed to not leave the house or even not to stray far from the comfort of the porcelin palace I feel let down . (Parts of me anyway . ) Good thing it wasn,t serious or it might have gotten serious . Things worked themselves out in the end and I feel better now . I think the beans I had at lunch did more than any tropical fruit .

Maybe it takes a tropical laidback lifestyle for this cure-all fruit to work its magic . Did I forget to do the magic dance while beheading a chicken at midnite ? Personally I think it should be called " Papaya No Go " L:O:L

B:T:W: it was delicious . I plan on having the other half for my breakfast again today . I saved the seeds and am dehydrating them for use in my spice grinder . They are purported to have a nice peppery taste . I hope they work better than the fruit . Hey maybe I was supposed to eat the seads and throw away the fruit . L:O:L

If that's where his mind is, he has more serious issues...

Another noble fruit smeared and linked to the toilet; oh, where will this end??

Sorry for the no go bro!

I don't know what to tell you---there's a good chance we are talking different species here....the Hawaiian varieties don't seem to effect me like the Meridol variety from central America....

Thanks Rob . Now I have to travel to South America . L:O:L

The one I had was kinda football shaped . I couldn,t tell what language it was speaking . It was delicious though . Very pleasing texture .

I,ll go down to the fruit store and see what they say . I,m going to try cooking with one . Funny thing is I don,t see its flavour going with meat which its purported to tenderise so well .

Chicken and Papaya Stir-Fry
Wonderful tasting healthy stir fry that is out of this world good and good for you!
2 teaspoons soy sauce
2 teaspoons dry white wine
1 teaspoon cornstarch
1 lb boneless skinless chicken breast halves, cut into 1 1/2-inch pieces,
from chicken beheaded at midnight with a blessed kukhri
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
1 small onion, thickly sliced
2 teaspoons minced fresh ginger
1 large garlic clove, minced
1 poblano chile or red anaheim chili, seeded and thickly sliced
1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
1 tablespoon soy sauce
1/2 cup fresh orange juice
2 ripe papayas, peeled seeded and cut into 3-by-1/2-inch strips (1/2-pound each)
1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
salt & freshly ground black pepper
1 large scallion, thinly sliced
4 servings
16 minutes 8 mins prep

1. In a medium bowl, combine the soy sauce with the wine and cornstarch. Add the chicken and turn to coat.
2. Heat the oil in a wok or large skillet over moderately high heat. Add the onion, ginger and garlic and stir-fry for 30 seconds. Add the chicken and stir-fry for 5 minutes. Add the poblano and crushed red pepper and continue stir-frying until the chicken is cooked through and the poblano softens, about 3 minutes. Add the soy sauce and stir-fry for 30 seconds. Using a slotted spoon, transfer the chicken to a plate.
3. Add the orange juice to the wok and boil until slightly thickened, about 3 minutes. Return the chicken to the wok, add the papaya and stir-fry until hot, about 1 minute. Add the lemon juice, season with salt and pepper and transfer to a platter. Garnish with the scallion and serve.

the chili/red pepper quantities may be cut back to taste, i prefer a bit milder levels myself.

the active enzyme in papaya is a digestive aid in that it helps break down or 'tenderise' tough meats, rather than acting as a laxative.

Kevin, I have always good luck with Papaya helping me go. Yep, just plain ol' Papaya. All I do is split it like you did, scrape out the seeds, sweeten it with a little Ex-Lax, and have it for breakfast with 4 cups of strong black coffee. The Papaya does the trick every time;)

In polite Spanish, one usually refers to papaya as "fruta bomba".... because in street talk "papaya" is slang for, well, uhhhh, it has a feminine meaning. :foot:
