How do you tell black paper from black G10?

Paper is smoother. Almost like glass sometimes. I've never had Busse paper micarta that was at all rough.If I recall , black paper is more black and has a slight sandpaper feel to it. The g10 is smoother and has slight grayish to it. Black paper also hasn’t been around for awhile, so model knife could help determine which it is.

When dry, yes, and has a brownish look to it. When oiled it is just smooth, deep, inky black goodness.Late to chime in…
