I spent most of the day planting, and took the opportunity to test drive a new fixed blade in 01 steel. Most of the tasks for the knife were opening bags-o-mulch, and cutting those paper potting containers. Those biodegradable pots really degraded the convex edge on my flat grind knife pretty quickly. I am back to sharp tonight, but does anyone know what is in those things? Seemed like wood pulp and sand, with a few nails thrown in for good measure. Maybe I need INFI.;)

They are probably saturated in fine dirt and sand. These abrasive materials will wear down your edge quick no matter what steel you use.

It's just like cutting grip tape. No matter what blade you use it'll be rough. :o

They are pressed from pulped wood and paper box material, and because their fiber structure is all mixed up, your edge is constantly cutting against the fiber and will dull quickly.

In your case heavy shears or serrated edge knives would make your life easier.
