New girl friend and my hand forged ,century old, kitchen knives are getting dull! Go figure ;)!

I did put a 1"x48" leather belt on the sander, I know: should fit a smaller driving wheel but... Ended up ordering a Paper wheels kit and bought today a 6" grinder, 1740 RPM.

Many sites reproduce the suggestion to use > 3600 RPM with the "paper wheels" but "Jantz supply" offers a complete Sharpening Kit including the Baldor Buffer, 1800 RPM.

For those who did experiment with the Paper wheels, would you recommend using them on a basic ± 3600 RPM grinder or prefer a ± 1800 RPM?
I don't mind the little extra time sharpening on a low RPM, I just want to make sure that the paper wheels "work fine" on low RPM, 'cause eventhough she's a "keeper", me, my knives and I also deserve some quality time!

Rich, those knives wouldn't happen to be Case, would they? I have one hanging on my kitchen wall with some other old kitchen knives, not for using, just curios.

I have those paper wheels for sharpening and I use a Baldor w/1800 and they work just fine, I think 3450 would be way too fast, just my two cents. You will like the wheels.

Don't use the leather belt on the girlfriend! :D

Too dangerous! Use a buffer instead... :D

Seriously, where did you get your 1"x48" belt? I'm in need of one. I know one shop that can custom make one, but it's the only place I've found: http://www.handamerican.com

No, they are "brand new" Sabatier from the early 1900 th. Hand forged, hand grinded HCS, taper from quillon to tip with Ebony grips! The biggest, 14" blade, has a 1/4" spine that tapers down to 1/32" at the tip! I even got 5 1/2" butcher knives with Pear grips I use as steak knives! The balance is awesome and what a pleasure to handle good craftmanship! I'm no "Zen guy" but what a difference hand made tools makes, having the privilege to handle part of one's history, one's proud work.

I know, much safer if tied to the bed post ;)

Here's the link for the 1x42 leather belt (15.95$US) :

These belt are well made. Mine was left in the garage for over 5 years, discarded on a shelf where it got all wrinkled and dried up. I was to throw it away when I decided to attempt a miracle using my western boots care formula (Lanolin dressing). Alleluia! It worked, it is almost as new!

For those interested, the Lanolin dressing will keep your leather belt, wheels (or Boots!)in perfect shape preventing moisture from seeping through, without "oiling" the leather. It will prevent the building up of honing compound "within", leaving it to the superficial layer in perfect adherence.

Lanolin dressing:
1 table sp. of pure lanolin
5 table spoon of Kerosene (idealy but not mandatory, oderless Kerosene)

In a double boiler you heat the mix until it blends. Be carefull and use an electric heater unless you want to change your name to "4th of july"! The Kerosene is the medium that "drives" the Lanolin "inside" the leather. Lanolin is a waterproof protein, not an oil. Apply (cold) generously with a brush and let dry until the smell is gone (yap, even odourless kerosene "smells"!), usualy 24-48 hours. This only need to be done once unless you should decide to wash your belt in soap water, in which case, you should really never play with knives again ;)

And thank you all for the advices, I appreciate!
