Hey everyone, I recently got a set of paper wheels and I have been working at it and I can now pretty reliably get a knife shaving shaving sharp with a mirrored edge. Thats an accomplishment for me as I have been sharpening challenged for a while. My question is how do I take that edge to the next level? I have done about 25 knives or so on the wheels and I cant seem to achieve the hair splitting edges some people have been able to accomplish.
Is there a step I am missing, or is it all about practice? Thank you for your help.

"shaving shaving sharp with a mirrored edge"

I've only been sharpening with the wheels for a couple months and have been very happy with the ease and speed of acquiring such real world serviceable edges "shaving shaving sharp with a mirrored edge", but like you have started to consider the next step even if it's not real world necessary or even practical. My guess is that to get even sharper might require hand stropping or paper wheels with finer polishing compounds. I know I have taken a few blades from the wheels too the bench sander with a leather belt and (Matchless) green compound and have noticed a slight improvement in sharpness. Hopefully someone with more experience will chime in with their method.

I can definitely get all of my blades real world sharp, but I just cant seem to find that "scary sharp" some people are able to achieve.

Try to minimize your edge burr. Sounds like you could be rolling the edge, either with the sharpening wheel or with the strop.
