cut co reports they use paper wheels to finish thier knife edges. they are the parent comp of k-bar. is this true. where do you get one and how do you use a {paper wheel}?

Seniormcblade,
A number of people in here use paper wheels. But the man to talk to would be Richard J. He could probably tell you anything you need to know.
Here is a huge thread to check out. I've used paper wheels for about 24 years and you can get a razor edge using them, but on my high $ knives I prefer freehand on waterstones/strop.

As for what cut co uses I have no idea.

I saw the show yesterday. I think they use sandpaper to sharpen and then the paper wheels to remove the burr.

Assuming they still do things the way they did on the How It's Made shop tour, Cutco uses a belt sander and a LARGE buffing wheel that is very flexible, but spins fast enough to give a relatively firm surface to remove the burr. From watching the video, their edges will not be as good as the ones people like Richard can do with the paper wheels.

Saw the show on History channel and they use flexible buffing wheels at about 3600 rpm. I think the paper wheels would be better.:)

How many passes does it take with paper wheels to make the edge convex?

How often do you refresh the polishing wheel with sandpaper and reload it? It seems to get black in a hurry. Do you just keep using it?

An endorsement from Cutco is not much of an endorsemnent, IMHO. :(

In my opinion, they are relatively low quality. :thumbdn:

Cutco or not, the wheels work great. The quality of Cutco knives has nothing to do with how they sharpen the knives.

I don't think you can convex an edge with paper wheels. At least I haven't seen or read or tried creating a convex edge from scratch. I do polish up the edge of my convex knives with wheels but I can't form the bevel with it.

I apply compound once for every 5 or so knives. I find that it works fine regardless of the color. I don't really keep track but I notice that eventually it does wear out.
