So I have a wicked edge sharpening system and wanted to try something new. I was reading some good things about a paper wheel and decided to give it a try. Can anyone guide me in what i need to get to sharpen with a paperwheel setup?
Well, you need a wheel kit to start with. Basically they come in 8" X 3/4" and 10" X 1" diameters with instructions, wax (for cooling), extra grit and polishing compound. There are two wheels. One has grit for establishing an edge and one is used with the polishing compound for honing your edge. Richard J. is the guru. He uses Razor Sharp - http://www.sharpeningwheels.com/ as do I.
You need some form of locomotion. A popular choice is a 6" variable speed grinder/polisher with an 8" kit. The 8" wheels fit with the guards removed.
At his point there are many techniques. Mike, the Razor Sharp owner likes high speed rotation (3450 RPM). Richard J. likes slower speed (1725 RPM) I use 1425 RPM (I'm in Australia where the electricity is 50 Hz) with a belt driven arbor system. Some hold the knife like grinding a chisel with the blade at about 5 o'clock with the top of the wheel rotating toward you. I believe Richard J. uses the same direction with the blade held flat at 1 o'clock (the other side of the top of the wheel) so he can watch the wire edge form. I hold the blade flat at 11 o'clock (top of wheel rotating away). ALL TECHNIQUES USE THE ROTATION AWAY FROM THE EDGE!
The learning curve is short, provided you understand the basics of sharpening.
