Para 2 Lock "Rubbing" Problem?

Hey guys,

Just got a digicam Para 2 (S30V, satin) in the mail today, and it seems a great value for the money. Can't really complain about fit and finish, and lockup is tight and solid. The compression lock works really well, but I'm experiencing some signficant rubbing/friction whenever I open the knife normally. It lasts all throughout the range of motion, and so the pivot feels far from smooth. However, if I depress the lock while opening, it's flawlessly smooth, so I'm wondering if the lock isn't maybe rubbing on the blade around the pivot as it swings open and closed.

Is this correct? If so, is it normal to experience such friction (it makes quite a loud grinding noise), and is it something that will go away with break-in or is otherwise fixable? I don't want to send it in if it's an easy, obvious fix that Spyderco themselves would do the same way.

Suggestions are much appreciated. (Need to pick up a set of torx drivers tomorrow, too, so I can disassemble).

Thanks!

I would use oil on the surfaces the come in contact with each other, from my experience the compression lock will break in with use. If oil doesn't help and a 100 or so opening and closing of the blade doesn't fix it, maybe you will need to send it to Spyderco. I had sticking lock problems on my Yojimbo 2, but they went away after using some oil and cycling the knife a couple hundred times. I would rather have the lock be a little stiff and wear in than be loose from the get go.

Both of my para 2s will go through times where the lock rubs against the blade and it feels rough and tight. Neither of them are dirty and it seems to slowly go away. Idk why it does it honestly

if the blade falls freely when you depress the lock what you hear and feel is the detent ball on the tang. over time the ball will wear a path in the tang and it'll feel smoother.

Had the same symptom with my para 2 whilst breaking it in. [The ball on the locking bar,BALL DETENT, rubbing on the blade when cycling the blade ] Felt really scratchy, notchy etc . Sprayed on some wd40, penetrating oil, around that area , went away within a few minutes and quite a few opening cycles . That was months ago , never happened again. Feels great now . kEEP OPENING AND SHUTTING THE BLADE . Good luck. Faron

I've had the same knife for a few weeks now, and haven't experienced anything like the issue you're describing. Good luck!

This happened with only my first Para2 - and it is indeed the lock's detent ball. A little lube and break-in did the trick and it is smooth as glass now. None of my other Para2s has this issue - a tribute to CQI, I guess!

Thanks so much, guys! I'll oil it up today and get to cycling. Should be a fun evening :)
