So I recently got my first spyderco, a para 2. And I have a couple questions for yall wise spyderco folks.

what kinda steel are the liners made out?

and what are yall using to lubricate the pivot? since im not planning to disassemble it im thinking of something with a needle applicator. any suggestions?

I don't know about the steel type for the liners, but I use ballistol on all my knives--I have the needle applicator too. Great stuff, but will not need all too much on a para2... actually, very, very little.

I haven't used either of mine enough to lube them yet. When the time comes probably one of the synthetic knife lubes or plain ol' Mobi1 Motor Oil. The demands a knife makes on oil are pretty insignificant leading to use something that has the ability to cling and stick around for a long time. As the previous poster said you should need very little to none anyway.

I could be wrong, but I'm guessing they use 420J2 for the liners. It's tough, and very stain resistant. As to the oil, I use WD-40, Silicone lube, 3 in 1... Pretty much any good oil will work.

Not sure about the steel in the liners... but as far as lubing the pivot... I use mineral oil for the pivot and blade on all my knives because I use them for food prep at times.

Nano-Oil is the best lubricant I've ever used. I have experience with probably 6-8 different popular brands.

I'm going to agree with Jet B above and say that the liners are almost certainly of the 420J2 variety. For oil, I've used many different kinds. I've recently started using Slip2000 EWL for my guns, so it gets used for my knives as well. Works well, but any decent oil will do the trick!

I just wanted to let yall know that I email spyderco and they replied say this
"The steel on the liners are a stainless steel."

just wanted to let yall know

I have had good success with Nano-Oil and Tuf-Glide. You can get them both with a needle applicator.

normally i would not recommend Tuf-glide as a pivot lubricant because it dries up to a protective film instead of remaining slippery, but on IKBS or other ball bearing pivots the stuff works great (you also rarely have to reapply the lube)

I disassemble all of mine, so I use Lucas Assembly Lube - it's stickier than your typical knife lubes, but it works super well for sealing up the pivot and you can wash with Soap / Water and the lube (for the most part) stays intact.

I swear by it and lube all my folding-knife pivots with it.

I have a suspicion that the left and right liners are either different steel or have some other difference in the manufacturing process (in addition to the lock bar cutout). They look the same but I tried PCB etching a set of liners once and got really different results.

Regarding oil: most any type of good oil will work fine. I use Rem Oil a lot and it works fine but there are many other options that will work as well.

I remember reading that the liners are 420 stainless. I don't know specifics though.
And some may cringe but I haven't lubed my para in forever. It actually feels smoother dry. I think its the oil I used though. All I have is a small can of 3 n 1 light oil. It works great for my other knives but it seemed to stiffen up my Para. It didn't feel as smooth and free. Well I take that back. I used it 2 weeks ago and got it covered in engine oil. So I got some 30 weight in it now probably ha.

Like the others said any decent oil will do fine. Don't be like me and run it dry, I assume it will cause more wear than needed on the washers and probably why I have a tiny bit of side to side play.
