Hey Spydie guys, I'm a huge fan of the P2 and have EDC'ed the S30V version for about 4 months... Until recently, when I decided to switch up for a smaller knife for about 10 days just to see if I'd miss it. Yep, I definitely missed the all-around awesomeness of my P2 and switched back.

So, today when I grabbed my trusty P2 and did a quick inspection I noticed the jimping on the spine and one of the spacers had some rust on them. After some Flitz and q-tip action the rust is gone but I was just wondering if anyone else has run into this issue/problem and if this is out of the ordinary?

In any event, the P2 is still my favorite EDC!!!

It is left over from the laser cutting at Spyderco factory. Inside the hole will be some scorch marks too.

S30V is highly rust resistant, I wouldnt worry about it.

Have an S30V that's been stationed in my bathroom for about 5 years. Use it mostly to open junk mail. Gets splashed with water occasionally and exposed to the humidity from the shower more often. Not a trace of rust yet, so I don't think it's one of the less rust resistant stainless steels.

Paul -

Are you opening your mail while on the john? Might want to keep that knife on a lanyard tied around your wrist if so to avoid a regrettable flushing incident.

Thanks guys! After everyone's input here I think I may had some corrosive substance come in contact with the jimping or something.

Did it look like this? My jimping had that from the factory. It's laser burn and common on some Spyderco's.

Now that being said, I saw gundude's Para2 and his stop pin is definitely rusted.

ouch ... that's really weird. stainless steel shouldn't rust that bad and that uniform.

don't want to tel BS but the only time i've seen stainless steel rusted that much was raw, non heat treated flats. you should make a thread to get sal's or someone else atention about that.

Matt, it looks like your Para has laser burn in the exact same spot as mine as well.

My stop pin is fine though.

my stop pin wasnt like that when i got it. it could just be my bad luck with rusting steel. :o

Wow gundude73 my stop pin looks a lot like that, only less rust. The jimping on the spine of my blade could be laser burnt, but honestly it looks just like the corrosion on the stop pin, a.k.a rust.

I'll try to grab some pics tomorrow.

Here's a shot of what laser burn looks like, see the lower liner jimping.

Like I said this is common, I have had a few Spydies like this and it's nothing to worry about. I even contacted Sal a couple years back about a UKPK that had this and he confirmed that it's not rust.

Matt's stop pin is a different story though.

The jimping on the spine of the blade is what appears to have rust on my P2, not the inner jimping. Either way, Flitz got rid of most of it.
