I recently returned a Para 3 LW SPY-27 because the clip screw was turning but not loosening. Spyderco sent a letter saying:

“We regret to inform you that we are unable to repair your C223PCBL PARA 3 SPY-27. We no longer manufacture this item therefore you have the following options...”

I received a $200 credit, but “exclusives are not allowed”.

Im definitely disappointed.

Strange. If you are disappointed because you liked the blade, I would ask them to return the blade, at least. You could then buy another Para 3 and swap in the Spy27 blade.

Disappointed because I like everything about the knife and it’s no longer being manufactured. Also disappointed that my credit is very limited. Out of the 21 Para 3’s on the website, there are only 4 available to choose from and I would not be able to order anything from any future exclusives. It’s also only good for 30 days and would need to be renewed.

Buying 2 knives to create the one I want wasn’t really the plan.

The closest replacement I’m limited to is a LW BD1N and a t-shirt.

Great communication and fast action from Spyderco, I just disagree with the fine print.

It would take 2 minutes of your time to swap the SPY27 blade into another Para 3. I would be happy that outcome, if Spyderco agrees to return the blade.

I also think that there may be some miscommunication. I don't believe that Spyderco has discontinued the model. I suspect that they are just temporarily out of stock. I would be surprised if this model is not available again in the not-too-distant future. You could potentially ask them to hold the credit until this model is available again.

The para3 LW spy27 is a relatively new release and regular production. I would contact customer service and confirm. Worst case scenario buy something else you want with the credit, and then buy the para3 spy27 somewhere else?

You're probably right that it's a miscommunication, or the wrong form letter that was sent. I'll call next week to confirm. See letter below for reference.

Like many of us, I've stripped, etched, stonewashed, blackwashed or in some way modified almost every knife I own, but this is not one that I feel the desire to spend $100 on another knife just so I can transplant the blade into it. I think you're missing the point.

Thanks for sharing your experience, OP. Count me in the camp of those that can't imagine Spyderco already discontinuing this model. I like the SPY27 steel, but don't really care for the FRN scales on the Para 3 LW, so I swapped the blade out with a G10 model I already had (see pic). Now, it's more to my liking.

If this letter is accurate, and Spyderco really is discontinuing SPY27, then I wonder if it is just too similar to their S45VN? Do they really need BD1N, S30V, S35VN, S45VN and SPY27? I don't know if there is enough of a difference in performance within this group to warrant all of them being in regular production, and I believe S45VN is slotted to become a regular production steel in the future.

Please follow up with any info Spyderco provides on this matter. I'm interested to hear what they have to say. Cheers.

Like I said earlier, GREAT communication and fast responses!

Hi Sal Glesser Sal Glesser

Thanks again for your help. Charlynn was really helpful. I appreciate the excellent customer service.

I ordered the Para 3 lightweight in BD1N along with some other Spyderco Swag and received it today.

Having you personally respond to a simple return prompted me to join this forum as a paying member. I know I’m in the right place.

Looks good, Sharp Minded. I hope these aren’t back ordered too long. I’m interested in trying out Spy27 and haven’t had the chance to own a para 3 lightweight yet.
