On Spyderco's website forum, there is a thread on the Para washer where some people are mentioning two-letter codes for determining when theirs was manufactured. Is there a reference for this code? Am I correct to think that the DE on the barcode sticker for my Para is the date code?

Just when was production of the Para changed from nylon to PB washers?

Simple enough, the D represents April, [4th letter in the alphabet=4th month of the year]
E represents 2005, DE=april, 05
I had to run up to the attic to check my para box, DF, April 06, mine has PB washers, not sure when the changeover happened.

Is it possible that some paras don't not have washer because I looked at mine and I dont see any washers. It looks like the blade is right next to the steel liner. At first it seemed a little gritty, but it has smoothed out( I thought it just needed to be broke in) opening and closing for a couple hrs. My box has DF So I guess it is made in April 2006.

Well, to be fair the Nylatron Washers that were used at one time are very thin and small. If you have the Nylatron washers you wouldn't be able to tell without taking the knife apart. I don't know about how the PB washers on the newer ones as I haven't seen one of those but the Nylatron washers are not visible from the outside.
