Hey all,
I received a pmil 2 from my girlfriend for my birthday. I edc a millie but lately have found its a wee bit big for my every day stuff. The p2 i got was absolutely perfect in every way, and i couldn't have been happier.

Unfortunately, it has developed lateral bladeplay and i am stumped. Both pivot screws were loctited and were really hard to get undone, but i managed to undo them and retighten them to as far as they would go, and still i have bladeplay. I tried the backspacer screws and the stop pin, but they are all tight. I honestly have no idea where this play could be coming from. Anyone have any thoughts?

How could it have developed bladeplay when both pivot screws were both firmly loctited in place? I'm sure it had none to start with, because that is my pet peeve with knives and i always check very carefully. Any ideas would be much appreciated.

I read that lateral blade play in the PM2 can be caused by the new bushing pivot used in that knife being a hair too wide. I haven't tried it but the remedy is supposed to be grinding a 1,000th or 2 of an inch off the sides of the bushing. Of course that would void the warranty, so you might just want to send it in and let Spyderco take care of it under the warranty.

It's the pivot bushing that prevents you from tightening the pivot any further. You'll need to send it in to be fixed.

If you want. I and a few other members gave tips on how to fix this in the first few threads about this. If you cant take it apart to adjust it. Then send it back in. At least take out the pivot screws. Re-titen the screws that hold the stop pin. And then re set the pivot screws as tite as they go. If this does not work. Then you need to send it back in.
Its something that spyderco's CS will easily fix.

I guess I missed those threads. Can you point us to them? Or perhaps can you provide detail on how this works?

No. Look to Page 2 in this forum, or any other thread labeled para 2. Or just try whats posted above.
Thanks
Matt

Interesting, my Para 2's are fine so I didn't pay attention to these threads. I was hoping to find something new about the bushing pivot system. Thanks for the info.

What in particular do you need to know about the bushing. We can try to help you that way. Shoot?!?!

OK I checked my two Paramillies 2 and I have noticed some lateral blade play when I released the lock on both knives (and let the unlock blade moves free).
So I was able to turn 45° clockwise the screw on boths pivot and now both Millie 2 are smooth as butter and with no lateral play.
So thanks to you I was able to fix that detail.
If you did not succeed in fixing it, you may send it to Golden and have it fixed for you.
cheers

Thanks for the replies everyone. i think ill just send it back and have the pros look at it. i can't wait for this thing to be perfect, because it is the perfect EDC knife

Try turning down the stop pin. Mine was loose and now it is tight as possible. No more play.

I did that to two of my Manix 2s. The blade tang measured .124 inch and the bushing were .1265 inch. It's hard to grind exactly 2 thousandths of an inch with hand tools but going 1 or 2 thousandths under (.122 inch or so) was ok. I just didn't need to crank down on the pivot screws too much. Locktite on the threads and so far nothing's come loose.

These were two of my most loose feeling Manix 2s and now they're about as tight as my Para 2 (came perfect from the factory). They don't swing free unless I shake the knife but they have no side to side play at all.

All I need to get for a 0 friction blade is to loosen the pivot screw by a fraction. Perfect.
