Para or Military

After reading a lot about the both of them here on the forums and finally fondling them in person I have decided to buy the Para and the Military. However they are not cheap knives so I have to decide which first. (I was not going to dilute myself into thinking that I would only buy one of them) What do you guys think? Which should be my first, and why?

(These are not my first spydies I've got a mess of them, but I believe that it is time to move to the "high end" toys.)

Jive, I have neither. I think I would buy the one that you have the least similar blade sizes. If you have few 4" folders, get the military. If you have more 4" than 3", get the Para. That way it will be different and earn more carry time.

I am in the EXACT same boat. I think I am going to pick up the PM first (in case you care). I figure for EDC both are big knives (compared to what I am used to), so if the PM feels bulky, then perhaps I can resist getting the Mil.

I am fairly confident I will end up with at least one of each anyway.

I was faced with a similar decision lately. Being LH, it made the decision a bit easier for me -- the LH Millies will not be around forever, and the new Para (with 4-way clip?) are not out yet.

It sure seems like a good time to be a Millie buyer -- there are a lot of exciting versions out right now. For example, if I was RH, I'd be all over the Ti/M4.

Silverdagger's point is a good one, but I would suggest that you buy the one that is more similar to the existing knives you have. There is probably a reason you own more 4" folders vs. 3" folders, or vice versa. I have a lot of slim 7" fixed blades, but when I get larger or smaller fixed blades, I still just grab one of the 7's. I've just found that it is a useful length for my use/carry, so why not get more options in a useful class?

......... if I was RH, I'd be all over the Ti/M4.

This brings up two perhaps critical points. BOTH the PM and the Mil have versions on the horizon that may be "better" for some users. The TiM4 is not going to be available for many months, perhaps the same is true of the PM2.

For the guy that wants to buy NOW, these points may be worth consideration.

I bought a para first, and I have been craving that extra blade length (especially when I am using the para for food prep)

that being said, the para is an excellent EDC, in some public circumstances, the Military could be a bit much.

My recommendation: get a para now, and get your name on the list for the Ti/G-10/M4

Thank you all for the help. You have definitely helped me make my decision, I am going to buy the Para now and wait for the new millies. That being said If I like it as much as I think I am going to I'll more than likely buy the new Para when it comes out aswell.

Cheers!

I started with the Para, then wanted a longer blade and got the millie and now have the para in my pocket everyday - millie for weekends away/food prep/outdoor activities.
I prefer the look of the millie and the streched out feel in the hand. It can be too big for my every day needs on the farm though.

Thanks to this posting I have made arrangements to buy a Para from a local knife knut this evening. It is the plain edge CPM S30V steel with black scales. I'll post pics when I can. Thanks everyone!

Cheers

If you can get your hands in any of them in D2, don't hesitate. BTW, any Millie in S90V, BG42, or CF scales is highly desirable.

Also, the fantastic Para in SE is being discontinued, so I'd hurry in getting one of those.

All else being equal, get the Millie first. I did. Then I got 6 other Millies and 4 Paras...

As far as timing purchases and making the decision between Para and Millie: the PM2 is coming out in the future, but which other Millie versions are on the horizon that may be better for some users? Besides the M4, is there a Millie2 on the way?

I lurk both Spyderco forums intermittently, but I just can't keep up with the future releases.

There is a all-titanium Military with S30v coming out that will be limited production (100/month IIRC), and then there's the 500-count sprint run half-Ti, half-G10 M4-bladed Military that's coming out exclusively for Knifeworks.

I believe the Millie2 is being designed now or might not even be that far along yet--that's a ways in the future.

I got my hands on my new Para, definitely my new obsession. I am beginning to realise why so many people have not just one but several of these. I'll post some pics in the morning.
