I've decided I need to make lanyards for some of my knives, but honestly have never made them before. Any in site on the best techniques you guys use? Again, I'm fairly new to braiding...
Thanks!

I wrap a lot of my knives. You should start by learning a simple Reeve Coil and go from there. Instructions for it may be on the Chris Reeve website. There is plenty of instruction and a lot of weave ideas on the web. There IS a learning curve to it but the results can be very satisfying. You can practice on cheap skeleton knives or wrap a nice one right away if you want. You can wrap knives with full handles as well once you get a feel for it. Your patterns and wraps will evolve.

Patience is necessary during the learning and you will have to unwrap and re-wrap a few but it's worth it.

Don't forget in addition to paracord there is a lot of nice leather lacing, cord, etc. out there too. I use leather a lot.

Thank you guys. I bought some cheap 325 paracord at Michaels today, I plan on screwing around with it tonight. I used to make hemp necklaces years ago, so, I hope I have a little bit of background...because I lack much patience!

I did my first Reeves coil! Pretty cool learning how to work with stuff!
@EODPaul I'll look into the diamond knot now!

Add the YouTube channel for as in TyingItALLTogether. The guy also has several books out. There's even a vid somewhere on there of he and his wife visiting Stormdrane. It's kind of like serious sharpening folks. They tend to in some way know or are aware of each other and in many cases correspond and hang out on the same forums and support each other's channels on the tube.

I've become fond of the snake knot for doing lanyards on knives. I just tend to get them a little too long because I don't want to stop tying. Here is TIAT's video for the snake knot bracelet. Just do the same basic stuff for doing a lanyard. I have one on my SAK Alox Farmer and use it to find and fish the knife out of my left pocket.

Checkout the snake knot, it's my personal favorite. It's easy and looks awesome!
But, if you really want to stand out, get some cool beads, or make some yourself. Here's one I did for my zt 0454, it's a snake knot with solid carbon fiber beads that I made. I love it!

I have tried everything from monkey fists to cobras, etc. but I have come to like the simple "hang man's knot" best of all - finished-off with a couple of beads (from ebay). Easy, neat, adjustable for about anything and inexpensive. Note: If you wrap a couple turns of scotch tape onto the end of the cord (sort of cone shaped, with the point out - like a needle) it is much easier to thread through the eye of the handle and the beads. It only take two or three minutes (total) ... so you can change the cord out anytime you want!

Here is an example of what I am carrying today:

YMMV,

Very cool, Blues .. I've thought about doing similar with fishing sinkers but have been concerned about them scratching the handle of my knife(s). How have you faired in that regard? I've been using beads from a jewelry maker I found on ebay. They are a perfect fit, have paw prints on them, and are pretty smooth/anti-scratch type finish - since they are for charm bracelets. 10 of them for about $2.50 including shipping. Again, great job Blue ..

Google "knife lanyards paracord"
My CRK is the only knife that supports a lanyard. Overhand and a diamond knot.

Wow @blues bender, That's a gorgeous rig! I've never thought of making beads! Going to try a snake knot tonight!

Thanks for the compliments guys!!

In my experience, I haven't had any scratching from beads so far. I've had pewter beads too, and I think since the pewter is softer than steel or titanium, it has a hard time scratching it up. It's hard to say since all my knives end up scratched anyways.

Try making beads some time, it's fun! All you need is a dremel and some patience. A 12" x 3/4" CF rod can make 20-24 beads, and will run you about $30 or less.
