Paracord my new Beckers

I finally bit the bullet, drank the kool-aid or whatever and ordered a new Magnum Camp and Remora from Tomar's. I'm now a Becker owner! I'd like to paracord wrap both handles. I am thinking of using some drab colors with a blaze orange accent (for seeing them if dropped in the brush, or a stream, etc.) Do you have any suggestions about wrap styles for these two? Would the handle of the carbon steel knife rust if the paracord got wet?

Thanks!

As far as I know, the MagCamp is coated so it will not rust. Are you planning to remove the stock scales and wrap it in 550 instead? Why not get/make orange Micarta and put some blazing orange custom scales on the Magnum? I think having only a paracord wrap as a grip on a knife that size would be pretty uncomfortable.

As for the Remora, I have never seen any wrapped ones, so I'll just shut up about this one.

If the orange is the big thing, not the paracord, you can always dye the Grivory with RIT dye. The stuff can be had at Home Depot, Lowes, Wal-Mart, anywhere that sells paint, fabric stores, and of course all over the internet. For accenting, you could just dye the last 1/2, or 1/3, or 1/4 of the handle.

How on earth would one attempt to dye grivory? Micarta maybe, but that grivory ain't gunna take no dye.

Let me say first that I can't imagine wrapping the Mag Camp either way, with or without the scales, but I have wrapped the handle of a chopper and am happy to pass along how I did it and how I found out how to do it.

Here's the video that I used to teach me how to wrap my Outcast thusly:

Now, the Outcast comes with a very skinny neoprene-covered handle, and I have pretty big hands, so that was the reason for wrapping that one. One thing I did find is that wrapping it, while making the size more to my liking, completely defeated the shock absorption qualities of the neoprene, and is now hard as a rock. Looks kind of neat I guess, but I may go back to stock before it's all said and done, or figure something else out altogether.

I cannot however, imagine the kind of Sasquatch hands that would need to wrap a BKT big-knife handle with scales intact, nor can I envision any advantage in comfort, ergos, function, handling ability, weight or anything else in wrapping just the handle without the scales.

But, to each his own. That video will give you one method of wrapping it if that's what you decide to do.

Damn I still need to get the BK5, I wish the Magnum Camp came with a sheath like the BK2......

It used to but for some damn reason they changed it :thumbdn:

When was this? Under Camillus?

Well, I don't think I am up for making the Micarta. I would probably rater shape some pre-made Micarta slabs. I eventually want to make my own hardwood scales for the thing, but I was thinking about experimenting with the paracord as an easy way to personalize the knife until I find a suitable piece of wood.

For the hardwood, I am imagining finding a cool piece of oak or madrone or something in the woods, cutting, and stabilizing it myself before finishing, so it is bound to take some time.

I just wrapped my BK-14 with Halloween camo X series 550. It isn't quite "hunter/neon" orange but brighter than regular. Here is a pic...I can get a better one if you want to really see the color.

I got the cord on E-Bay 1.90 for 25' (plus ship) he also had GLOW IN THE DARK 550 cord!

Sounds like your best bet is trying to get some micarta slabs, look at Tomar's or Ebay. Might be a little bit tough to find a pair, so be patient. Then grab some RIT dye and make 'em orange.

OR you could try to modify the stock slabs to be thin enough to be wrapped with paracord and still be comfortable (not too thick to hold in your hand, might not be an issue if you have big hands).

OR you could just unscrew the stock slabs, wrap some cord around the grip area and take it out for a day. Trying is for free, as we say in Germany! Just experiment with different options and ideas, get creative and have some fun!

My bk2's edge didn't have a consistant geometry in the belly area, but I'm fixing it a little at a time as I resharpen it.
