We all love 550 paracord right?

Right.

I see if for sale in different places, with varying prices.
A bunch of these places claim it's "mil-spec" or "the real thing" and caution you against fakes.

How do you tell if your paracord is "real?"

It has a parachute attached to it . . . .?:D Seriously, I understand that genuine 550 cord has an outer casing and between 5-7 inner strands. As for how one determines what, if anything, is 'mil-spec' I can't help you.

I believe that 7 strand 550 cord is the true mil-spec cord. I've heard of 8 strand which should be marginally stronger. There are a few dealers that sell great products, I hope they chime in or are mentioned because only CountyComm comes to mind and I wasn't terribly excited with their cord. It's fine but nothing special.

Supply Captain sells it too, never tried theirs.

I sell 8 strand paracord in the mil spec colors (black, brown, tan, white, red, ACU/foliage green, olive drab, camo green) and orange. The official mil spec is 7, 8, or 9 inner strands. I get my stuff from a US military parachute manufacturer, so I promise it is truly mil spec. :)

The reason the stuff I get is 8 strand is because the manufacturer is constantly testing his production cord and found that he was getting breaks at close to 600 lbs. Since he actually uses this stuff on military parachutes, he was not comfortable with not completely exceeding the spec, so he added another inner strand to make the breaks closer to 650-700 lbs.

The 8 strand stuff from storl (GG) is pretty good. Compared to the 7 strand stuff I get from CountyComm the inner strands are smoother, but the sheath (mantle) is smaller. I try not to mix CC and GG paracord when I'm doing a square lanyard as it ends up a little bit more rectangular then square. Round it doesn't matter.

Expect to pay between $8 and $12 per 100' hank. Standard colors are black, od green, acu forest / gray, digi camo, orange, woodland camo, and acu camo. Oddball colors (blue, electric green, yellow, etc) are probably not "milspec" but still probably have 7-8 strands and a working load of 550lbs.

Milspec is more of a military standard, standard colors, design, weave style, internal strands, etc, rather then just breaking strength.
