There is a Paragon kiln on craigslist in my area for $150. The model number is A88B, max temp is 2300, 220v. It is an upright kiln used for ceramics, I think. Can i use this for heat treating? I only use either O1 or 1084 steel and currently do my heat treat in a propane forge. How does the temp control on this kiln work? I know an upright oven is not ideal for knifemaking but for $150, I have to ask. :)

ANy help is appreciated,

thanks

It will cost near $200 to convert that oven, and it isn't really the right type, but is deep enough to work. It will need a good while to heat up and stabilize. I would allow an hour before inserting a blade.

You would make a 3" hole in the center of the top, and hang the blades on 1/8" SS wire hooks. You will need to make a fire brick cover for the holes.

I use an upright Paragon ceramic kiln to heat treat. Stacy is right, it takes a while to come up to temp. As Stacy suggested, cut a 3-4 inch hole in the top and suspend your blades with ss wire. I am pleased with it but in time, I will sell it to someone who does ceramics and use the proceeds to buy a knife kiln. If it works and is not damaged on the inside, 150 is a good price I think.
