Hello all,

I just purchased a Paragon 24" with the gas attachment, I've been reading thru the manuals and haven't came across any suggested settings, general use or other instructions pertaining to it.

I know there are at least a couple of you out there with this setup.

Would someone please lend me some advice on using it?

thanks

I have the same set up on my Paragon. My reccomendation - don't bother using it and just use stainless foil. I did not have any sucess using the gas option and to get enough coverage of gas was too expensive. Just my experience.

The only thing I know about gasses is that the volume increases with heat. I think you would want a lower setting for the gas injection since the higher temps you are dealing with would lend more volume of gas inside the kiln. If I am mistaken, someone please correct me. I am going on my high school chemistry (which has been awhile). -Matt-

So about how long will a bottle last? How many knives? How long will a roll of foil last? I'm talking about for hunter, EDC sized blades.

Also, after firing it up for the first time tonight I started wondering how long it's gonna take for this thing to cool down to say 350-400 if I'm tempering 5160, 01, or something similar. It's been a strict practice of mine to have the house oven preheated and ready to get the knife in after the quench. Usually about 10 minutes but sometimes less if I can. Trying to stay within that 15 minute window. As it looks right now I'm still gonna have to use the house oven for the first temper. Then again it could be the adrenalin and nicotine talking.....

any advice, pet recipes, programming tips appreciated.

Chris

You are not going to be able to use the Paragon for tempering heats for several hour at the earliest. I reccomend haunting some garage sales and finding yourself a toaster oven and getting a good quality oven thermometer to set inside it. Dial in the right temp w/ the thermometer and then unplug/plug the oven to turn it on and off. At least that is what I do. A big bowie might still require using the wifes oven.
A roll of foil will last years - I used half a bottle of gas on one HT session and still was not happy w/ the results. My Paragon is the 24" model.

In a nutshell, they didn't know how to use it, "They just supply the means"....

"Contact Crucible", the customer service rep. said.

I asked if I could take the gas attachment off and send it back to them for a refund...... The answer was "NO it is part of the Kiln."

I was told to contact the dealer that I got it from and talk to them about getting my money back on that option.

Yes there was a bit more said but it doesn't matter, in a way I guess it was my fault for not checking into it more.

So in the end, if you want a great programmable oven I can recommend Paragon. I WILL NOT recommend that you opt for the gas attachment.

They could probably tell you just about anything else you might want to know about it.

After another email back to Paragon, and a little more deliberation, they
are going to allow me to send the gas attachment back for a refund.

Paragon makes a great oven, do your homework about the gas though.

I had a bad experience with their customer service dept, but one of their "GURU'S" came thru for me.

So I'll have to take back what was turning into negative feelings toward them.
