paramil, S30V, and rust

This sort of question has certainly come up before, but I'm not sure if in
quite in the same way, soo...

Went for a swim in a fresh water pond earlier today with our German
Shepherd pup (she did well! - fun!)...and I had my Spydie Paramilitary
clipped to my suit, intentionally. Within the hour, I was home, washed
it out under hot water, used my wife's blowdryer to dry it -- seemed fine.

Except, that I noticed that when closed, there was what appears to be
rust where the blade would "roll" against the locking mechanism (forgive
my ignorance in accurately describing the parts involved - suffice to say
it's only accessible via a QTip, perhaps.

I'm convinced it was rusted before today's swim, particularly since this
knife has never been anywhere near salt water. Maybe one too many days
in a sweaty pocket, doing yard work.

Any suggestions about how to remove rust from an area that's almost *inside* the knife? Is the fact that it's S30V any factor?

Also, any opinions about those G10 handles getting wet? I would expect I'll repeat these swims a couple times a week until it gets too cold, and I won't go swimming without something clipped to my suit. I have other FRN Spydies, but I'm rather attached to the Para - but if water is a bad thing for G10, maybe I'll stop doing that...?

Try using a pipe cleaner with some Flitz or other metal polish to remove the rust, then just make sure you keep it protected with something like Tuf-Glide, Militec, or whatever your favorite lubricant might be(and I don't mean K-Y Jelly).

G-10 is circuit board material. It is proof against almost any kind of corrosion. Water will not bother G-10.

Any steel with significant amounts of carbon will rust, although S30V should rust slowly. The problem is that it will rust in exactly the hardest places to get to, that's why sweat getting trapped inside the handle is so destructive. Definitely lubricate it against sweat or immersion.

In all my readings and experience with G-10, it is completely unaffected by salt or fresh water. There is no concern.

Only you know the extent of what you see inside the compression insert. A good photo would probably require a tripod, special lighting and lens. But let me take a guess. You can decide if it matches reality.

As Frank K. suggested, it may be discoloration incurred by laser during manufacture. It also may be rust. Assuming it is rust: 1- This is the first time you noticed and 2- Given the nature of this steel, the rust is probably negligable at this stage, and not deep enough to affect function in any noticeable way.

You could try extraordinary methods to get the steel bright but, if I were you, I would start by using a good, rust inhibiting lubricant. It may be all that is that is necessary and, good practice anyway.

I also am attached to my Paramilly. I have the black blade model but the compression pin has a definite reddish discoloration. I have sometimes wondered about it.

It is probably discoloration from the laser cutting, I had a similar thing with my Manix.

G-10 is unaffected by water.

Frank, thanks for the link to that thread. The discolorations I'm seeing are exactly like what was described, and I see now that they are in exactly the same locations (i.e. thumbhole, finger groves, and the back of the blade where the lock engages. Never even noticed the thumbhole discolorations until now, after reading that thread
