what angle is a paramilitary 2 set from factory? and whats a good angle (if not the factory) for EDC?

just got a DMT aligner and was just wondering what angle to use.. ty in advance

Most Spyderco factory edges I've encountered are between 30° and 40° inclusive, and anywhere in that range would be a good general-use edge for you to target in your sharpening as well.

Depends on wich one you are using, put your s30 at 40 degrees and put your cts20cp at 30 degrees. The s30 probably came thinner then 40 so just put a forty degree micro bevel on it

The simple answer is that they're sharpened by hand, so it's going to vary from knife to knife. The goal is 30°, though.

TY... i just needed the preferred angle to set my DMT aligner at :)

yeah that was the plan :) i wasnt sure if it was something simple like "all spydercos are set at 30 deg " or something along those lines... but the good ol sharpie and trial and error will be fine ;)

Mark the edge with Sharpie and take a test stroke. If you aren't removing all the ink, adjust your angle until you are.

Chances are very low that one of the settings is going to match the bevel angles exactly. If you want a single bevel, you're going to have to do a lot of grinding at a setting with a lower angle than your bevels. Otherwise you could do a microbevel and just use that setting all the time. Then you can start sharpening right away.

yeah i was just going to pick the closest angle on the aligner and (if i had to) run through all 5 stones (ex coarse, corase, fine, xfine, xxfine) and just reprofile and sharpen

obviously im not doing this until my blade needs to be sharpened
from what i have read on the forums and the net the coarse and xcoarse stones are more than adequate at reprofiling

Setting 5 or 6 but most likely 6.

All the other settings are kinda worthless unless you use the clamp with bench hones.

And yes, you WILL need to set a new bevel with the aligner. If you don't it just won't turn out right.

I just sharpened a Paramilitary 2 today in CTS-20CP steel for a customer. It was around 32 inclusive which broke out to 15/17. I re-profiled to 30 inclusive (15/15), polished to 3.5 microns and tested on a catalog. Brand new, the blade slice-cut through page 25 of the catalog. Sharpened, it severed the catalog completely to page 79 and penetrated to page 278 in places along the slice. After the catalog it was still sort of passing the hanging hair test though not in the belly of the blade where the greatest force was applied. It's not exactly real world data but might be useful.

Please let me know how the dmt works out for you. I have invested $100 in bench stones and just can't get it. I'm thinking about a sharpmaker but not sure yet. I don't want to waste the $ invested in the stones but I really suck at sharpening.

Thanks

well so far ive sharpened some cheap knives and a few of my other folders to great success ...you can actually use the aligner WITH bench stones ..the amount of metal the coarse (let alone xtra coarse) stones remove just erase metal making reprofiling easy.. the sharpmaker is good for touching up blades inbetween full sharpening... i would never attempt to reprofile or sharpen a truly dull knife on one.. the dmt aligner IMO is the best option for the money the only other sharpening device i will use with my DMT aligner is a horsehide strop dry..

You won't be able to match the bevels perfectly with the clamp. One side will always be off a bit due either to the edge or your clamp being slightly off-center on one side. You'll end up re-beveling it to some extent. I'd go thin with it & micro-bevel at the next angle up when resharpening to save time.

When you've finished your last light passes with your finest stone on the Aligner, twist the clamp's knob maybe a quarter-turn & give it 4 or 5 more very light passes per side. It's a neat tip for the Aligner I picked up somewhere on this forum. Works for me.
