Paramilitary 2 Blade play

Hey all,

I recently found and purchased a Spyderco Paramilitary 2 Digi cam/satin S30V on Amazon.
The knife was brand new and came in the box with the paper.

I didnt notice any side to side play but a little up and down.

Now, about 2 weeks later, Ive noticed side to side play. The hardest thing i put the knife through was
making a few cuts through thin cardboard to see how it slices.

Ive tried adjusting ALL screws on the knife and there is still play even if i tighten them down enough
to prevent the blade from falling closed by pressing the compression lock.

what gives?

The blade play kinda came out of nowhere and like I said, I didnt do anything AT ALL to warrant this.

From what I hear, they are having a lot of problems in golden, id imagine its a tolerance issue that they let squek by. I hear that's why there is such a shortage right now, cant get anything lasered correctly.

That's certainly a possibility. I wish I would have known that, maybe I would have waited. Also, I paid about $30 over retail so that stings a little bit.

Dont get me wrong, I absolutely love the knife and It hasnt left my hand, but Ive had my eyes set on it for about 4 months now and kinda let me down there.

I would have to disagree here.

Quite a few discussions here since the knife has been released:

Heisenberg, hope you can find an answer in there :)

Both of mine have the teeniest amount of side to side, and I just chalked it up to the pivot bushing design.

I don't check for side to side play. So I have no problem. :D

Mine has some play and I sent it in. They sent it back unaltered and said it was within thier tolerances. It doesn't really bother and it is a great knife.

I don't know how handy you are or if you care about your warranty. On my particular PM2 where the top holes for the clip were drilled, there was a tiny bit of metal protruding into the bronze washer causing play and grittyness. I took the knife apart, and lightly sanded the metal liner where the holes for the clip were and it made the knife smoother and lock up solid side to side. Again, this was on my particular knife. Take apart at your own risk.

I also had one in camo like yours, one with black g-10 and a sprint run with cts-20cp steel and sold them all because of that!
I could always find a bit of side to side play on them.
After the first one i had the feeling that that would happen if i would have bought one again and sure enough it did!
I kept buying the Para2 because it really is a nice knife but never seem to keep be able to keep it.
That little bladeplay simply bugs the hell out of me.

I own over 22 of them and none have any play. My guess is you just got one that needed some more fine tuning. Send it back and it will be taken care of.

From what you hear? Who said what?
What problems did "they" have?
Tolerance issue creating a shortage?

Instead of making such vague statements, maybe you can provide some examples to provide some evidence of your claim? Someone that doesn't know better reads posts like yours and takes them to heart. You should write in certain terms, to avoid misunderstandings.

Have you ever heard of or know what a production schedule is?

I don't own a para2, but just about every knife I have handled had a least a slight amount of blade play if you wiggled the blade hard enough. But unless the knife is actually adjusted the best it can be, you may or may not be able to get rid of the play. I am in the same boat as you only with a Benchmade 707. I checked for play when I bought it, but some where along the way it developed a slight amount of play, no matter how much I adjust the pivot. It still has a slight amount even if the pivot is tight enough the blade will hardly move. Sometimes it seems like it doesn't have the play though, maybe I'm crazy, maybe it's the knife. The only knife I have handled that had no blade play was a Benchmade 710 at a shop, that thing was rock solid. I often wonder what amount of force each individual applies to a blade to determine blade play. If I only apply a couple lbs of force, then there is no play. But if I grab the tip, and apply a little more force, then there is play with my knife. Since my knife is a light use edc, I am not to worried. I don't think the blade play will ever get much worse, hopefully. But I do understand not wanting any play. I could send my knife back and it might get fixed, but it really won't effect the way the knife cuts, which is the real reason I carry a knife. If I were you I would determine how much the blade play bothers you, and then send it back or live with it. I say if it really bothers you then try sending it back. But, I have sent thing back to the manufacturer, and still been upset with the results. But if you send it back and it doesn't get fixed at least you tried, it very well could come back perfect to.

I know people that work at spyderco, I talked to a guy a few weeks ago and he said they lasered out a fuck ton of liners that when they assembled they over engaged. They had houndreds of pm2 at the last spyderco sale in nov. That had that issue of over engaging. Q/c isnt checking close enough, they have a .003" tolerence, and with how many knives they make its bound to get messed up along the way just how it goes. I got the January spyderco byte email, and in it said they were behind and going to be filling backorders untill summer. That's when I talked to my "people" And yes I do understand a production schedule, i work at a metal fab shop... that's why I was asking my friends at spyderco wtf?
