Just ordered my first Spyderco, after looking at them for weeks i ordered the Digi Camo with Black Blade Paramilitary 2 w/ S30V steel. But now that ive been looking around i found a brand new Paramilitary 2 with S90V and Carbon Fiber scales for $279.00.

What im trying to figure out is whether the S90V is worth the extra cash. And what are the advantages?

Blake.

S90V will hold an edge a lot longer and the carbon fiber handle is light and cool looking. I'd say jump on it. $279.00 for a brand new Paramilitary 2 in S90V is a steal these days... or you know, you could tell me where you are getting it :D

If you search for Ankerson's review of blade steel you will see that S90V is one of the top steels.

I have an S30V blade, but have not spent much time sharpening it yet. The general consensus I have gathered is that S30V does not stay shaving sharp very long, but will be sharp enough for most tasks for a long time. I believe that S90V will stay very sharp longer than S30V, but it comes at a higher price. I also believe that S90V is not very hard to get really sharp, but the S30V takes longer to get to that point. These are some of the observations I have noticed on the board as I had the same question as you have raised.

Regards,
Jeff

If you want a steel that will most likely be in the same class as the s90 for about $100 less you can order a M390.

Or you can get a cts 20cp para, wich is equal to if not better then s90(very similar composition different powder process) for a hundred dollars less. I really do like peel ply cf though, I feel the grip of it just doesn't wear away at all unlike g10 and it looks cooler

If you don't have a job or tasks that require a lot of use daily s30 will serve you just fine.if you have a sharpmaker you wont have a problem putting a screaming edge on either

I have both and can say you wont notice a huge difference other than not having to hit the sharpener as much. Also the carbon fiber looks awesome. Otherwise you're buying it for bragging rights like I did haha

With S90V, you are paying for wow-factor, and the value of that varies from person to person. It's my favorite steel and I bought a Para 2 sprint of this model, but I did't pay $279 for mine. Realistically, as folks have shared, you are saving yourself time between sharpenings between S90V and S30V. I don't know if there are any normal tasks (not talking about cutting tires or car doors here) that S90V will do that S30V can't. It depends on what your wants are (notice I did not say "needs").

^ agreed. S30V will give good performance under most normal circumstances, and if you regularly touch up/sharpen your S30V edge, you're not going to notice that much of a difference in most real world use.

that being said, using higher end steels like S90v/20CP will make you spoiled when you go back to using steels like AUS-8, VG-10 or even S30V.

No flies on the S30V, but if you can buy the S90V for that price, you can sharpen it tomorrow and probably plan on sharpening it...in 2014 or so... ;)

Go for the s90V and go quick before it sells! S90V is in a whole different league. Once you use it you will be amazed.

I've dulled it to the piont it needed to be sharpened in about a month at the plant nursery. Not quite 2014 but at a place where s30 can go in three days that's pretty impressive. ;)
