Anybody know where i can find a parang? I saw one at Alanta cutlery but its made in India. Like to find a good user.

Not true parangs, per se, but you may wish to check out the Martindale line available from www.cutsforthknives.com

The Golok #2 is based on the parang and used by the British military.

Chad,

I haven't purchased anything from them, but, I have heard they are good. They have been mentioned several times on this and other forums.

The Becker Knife and Tool Patrol Machete is based on the Parang I believe, with many improvements. Under $100 too. :D

Plenty of good parangs in Malaysia but you are too far away.

Anywhere in Southeast Asia, you can come across parangs: Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Sabah, Sarawak.

All shapes and sizes. If you are holidaying here, you can easily pick up about a dozen. They are actually quite affordable.

I've just ordered a "standard parang" from www.valiantco.com - it helps that they are based in Australia and I live next door.

The pre-sales service was great (very fast to respond to emails) - I haven't received it yet, so I will have to follow up. Prices are very good (comparatively.)

I'm looking forward to seeing the grinds (or lack thereof)...

Cheers,

Thanx i think i will try the Valiant co. Ive had a Becker Kurkri a few years ago the first time i tried it on a limb i was removing to put up my tree stand the blade chipped and pieces of hit me in the face no cuts but it was so brittle it was useless! NO MORE BECKERS FOR ME! By the way anyone see Ray Mears on the Travel channel this weekLoved his jungle parang.

Camillus makes them now and they are quite good. Ask around.

I saw the shows where Ray used the Parang. I've been trying to find that knife since with no luck. The Golok #2 is supposed to be used by Ray. Anybody know where his Parang came from?

Thanks, Steve

Bump for this old thread as I've been watching "Ray Mear's Bushcraft" lately on OLN & would love to know if anybody does know what parang Ray uses. I watched "Trips money can't buy" with him & Ewan Mcgregor in the rain forest last week & really want to know more about that parang. So anybody?? Please?

don't know anything about the Ray....but the valiantco goloks are good.

Hey Spyken thanks for answering! I looked at their site last night, a lot of interesting stuff their just couldn't find anything that looked quite the same, the grip on his hooked back towards the pinky finger a bit, most of the parangs I've looked at ended in a ball or flat end (except for the carved ones).
