had a chance to play with one of these over the weekend at the Becker Gathering.
serious lust ensued.
chopped through a 2x4 in 7 swings.
chopped up a 1 1/4" thick branch like cutting carrots.

if you're remotely interested in choppers/machetes, go buy one.
if you're not, buy one anyway - you need a new addiction, you just weren't aware of it yet. :D

I lucked into having one of these sent home with me to play with at the Beckerhead gathering. I've cut plenty of green vegetation and some smaller (sub 4")diameter hardwood, this thing rocks!

I really like that there was enough cord supplied in the box to attach a necessary lanyard and a makeshift crossbody strap for the sheath.

I'll throw a review together soon and post it in a separate thread.

Love mine. I've had it for a couple weeks now and it's been great for working in the yard. Vines, brush, some batoning for a fire and it still shaves. The same nice steel in my BK9, but 5 inches longer with a really usable handle.

Here it is before it got used (bk9 for scale.)

I wish they would have come up with a better sheath for $100. But I probably would hate that sheath too so whatever. I'll have to get one sooner or later.

I just priced one at the Aussie distributor I get my beckers from . $140 aud plus $10 for postage.

Well if you stick with the logic that a sheath is just for holding the knife when you aren't, it does the job fine. It ain't ideal, but kydex or leather could be found easily.

I been under the impression the the bk9 would handle about the same as this would seems I may have been wrong ( not nearly a rare a thing as you would think :D )
I guess I know what the next blade is that I need.

Well I consider a sheath more than just a blade cover. To me it's part of a system and if a part of a system isn't up to snuff then the whole system breaks down. But like I said, even if they had something nicer it probably still wouldn't be up to my standards so it doesn't make much difference anyway. I think there's a shop In Colorado Springs that does kydex so that would save me a good amount on shipping to another bender and having to pay shipping for both the blade and the sheath back to me. In addition to all the other knives I have that need kydex.

Can anybody tell me how this thing stacks up against the Grass Machete? I may end up getting both but still wondering about the strengths and weaknesses of each.

Please pm me if you have experience with both.

Thanks!

I need this, where can I find more details and do the usual BF dealers carry them?

I've been looking for a sheath for mine. It does fit it a condor golok sheath, but I don't know if that's actually better functionally. My esee light machete does better at light brush, but I was still able to trim my willow with the parangatang so it's still pretty good.

Mine came from tomars kabars, but I've seen them at knife works as well.

I have not used a current production grass machete - but was not impressed with the prototype.
that said, when I checked on Monday, Tomars had the best price I could find on these - and they're a paid BF supporting vendor, so it's not deal spotting to mention them. :)

I just ordered a Parangatang for heavy weeds and light cleanup in the backyard. How well do these bladed hold up on small 1" diameter evergreens?

I like the looks of the parangatang. But unfortunately I can't afford one right now, as I just ordered two other fine KA-BAR products for the same price.

I believe you'll be highly satisfied with the Parangatang's performance for your needs. I haven't tried it out on Evergreens yet, but knowing the material from other choppers, the Parangatang should be outstanding .

Did you touch up the edge before using it, or was it fine out of the box? Mine will be coming in later today, and I plan to use it when I get a chance...soon.

Mine was hair shaving sharp outta da box.

I just read the specs on the Ka-Bar website. I was surprised to find that the blade is .188" thick and has a Rockwell hardness of 56-58. That's really impressive. Plus it's made in the USA. I might have to check one of these out at some point.
