I did my first quench with Parks 50 tonight. I hope it is as good as y’all say it is, because it sure doesn’t smell as nice as smoked canola oil did in my shop! 😂

True enough....when I first started I didn't care much about the tang and didn't always have enough oil to get the entire blade and tang under the oil. Also used the same tongs to forge and then quench.

Now I make sure I have enough oil to completely cover the blade and tang and use a set of cold tongs to grab the blade before the quench. Probably cut the smoke down by 90 percent. Most of the smoke comes off of the hot steel near the surface of the oil.

None of it's good for you obviously, and any burning oil stinks.

This has helped me keep the fog in my shop down.

I always wear a respirator when using parks 50. The smell makes me think there's some toxic stuff in there that makes up the magic properties :)
