partial serrations

I just got off of E-Prey earlier, won a partially serrated Emerson CQC-13 for $99. I was the only dude that bid on it. Guy was in the US, good reputation, clean pictures, etc. Very clean looking deal. Meanwhile there's a CQC-13 with a plain edge that's getting quite a bit of attention. What could the difference really be?

I can't help but to wonder if the one I got was unpopular due to the PS blade? Granted, I'm not a huge fan of them myself, but for $100 I can certainly make due with it. It seems like PS blades were real big in the early 90's, or so. Now I just don't seem to see or hear as much about them.

ya' reckon they're losing a bit of popularity these days?

It seems like it. For cutting rope or other fiber materials I think the serrated blade is the best. But for easy sharpening the straight edge is the best.

Hate 'em.
From what I've gathered, most people who are into Emerson knives (myself included) prefer plain edge to partially serrated.
The uncoated blades are also more popular among collectors of EKI blades.
Peace.

I have always preferred a full strait edge on most knives, on some like certain spiderco's and benchmades I do like a partial serration, but I wouldnt go 50 dollars out of the way to avoid PS. I think it was big because it was new and now that its not new and in, its just another thing that if you need it you buy it if not you buy fully serrated or just a strait edge.

Full or NONE is the way to go
Agreed.

Unless the knife is freaking huge, the blade won't have enough partial serrations to be "worth it". Just my preferences/opinion. A Spyderco Military comes close.

That's why I carry 2 knives. A plain edge for more general and delicate use, and a serrated knife (Atlantic Salt) for cutting things that don't require finesse.

For most of my knife uses I very much prefer plain edge. The biggest time I like serrations, surprisingly is on a tanto blade. Usually if I'm carrying one of those, it's because I'm working around machines and metal, scraping gaskets, light prying, cutting hose, etc. During those times when I'm doing that kinda stuff, and know I'm not gonna be whittling,or anything the serrations are really nice. Throw them the heck away otherwise.

Still happy to get my partially serrated Emerson though.:D
