Partially serrated edges...what do you think?

Do you guys like them or no?

Personally I prefer either a fully serrated blade, or a plain edge on my knives. I feel that 50/50 or 3/4 serrated blades, instead of giving the best of both worlds, detracts from the usefulness of either edge for the sake of including more features in a single knife.

I've seen two knives with the serrations in the front part of the blade, nearer to the point, and have yet to try either. One is a victorinox SAK with a locking blade, and a scalloped front edge. The other is the AG Russel marlinespike knife. I have never used them, so I can't comment on either knife, but for the purpose of this thread, I include them for input.

Does anyone have any ideas or comments on the partially serrated blade, whether the edge is at the rear, near the choil, or at the front, nearer the point?

Pete

from my experience w.spyderco the partially serrated blades have the serrations on the rear of the blade, not near the tip..personally i like serrated (fully serrated) but if there was a spyderco that i liked enough and the price was right i wouldn't hesitate to get partially serrated

I think with reasonably long blades, 3.5-4.0 combo edges can be very useful. Typically I carry a SE knife and a PE knife but my recently acquired MT amphibian has a combo edge and I really like the knife overall and the blade shape especially. I don't feel it is any less useful for the two edges and in some cases is perhaps more useful.
I think on a knife the size of a Delica or smaller you quickly start to loose the usefulness of the different edges.

I think combo edge is a great choice for a single utility blade for edc.

I always wanted a blade with the serrations in the middle. Plain edge 25% at the tip for straight, clean cuts on materials like cloth or paper, then 50% serrated for power cutting, then 25% PE at the hilt for fine work, where you're holding the object to be cut in one hand and nicking away at it with the last inch of the blade for maximum control.

I'm with you Pete, either fully serrated or plain edge. And I find Spyderedge to be the most effective serrations.

I like the spyderco serrations, but for me it's one way or the other. that is why I am carrying a fully serrated C25 centofante with my PE G10 Police.
CE IMHO combines the drawbacks of both options, making the knife in question less useful.

btw, there are actually spydercos in CE with the serrations in front near the tip, like this police model:

i think i prefer one PE and one SE in general, though i wouldn't mind trying some hybrid designs. i like the 25/50/25 idea, though sharpening it properly could be a real pain, especially if the knife does not have a straight edge.

i'm probably just going to get an endura PE to go with my merlin SE and be happy with it. good combination of both blade types.

I'm with you on that!!! 50/50 to me means too much of a bad thing, too little of a good thing.

I like the way its done on the serrated military. It looks like its about 25/75. I'd like to see a SS Enduara with the blade length increased to 4 or 5 inches and the serrated edge done like the Military. For me it would have enough plain edge to do all the things I needed it to do and plenty enough serrated edge to still be useful. But generally I do find myself buying them done fully in one or the other.
