Parts for Disc Sander?

I built myself a horizontal disc sander, and I am missing a few parts to make it ideal for my needs.

First I am looking for a hard rubber backing to permanently adhere to the disc to cushion the grinding a little. Maybe like a 1/8-1/4 70 durometer rubber or somethin?? Somethin that would be able to be sprayed with fethering adhesive and wiped off with thinner.

Second I am looking for some kind of foot switch, somethin like whats on a sewing machine, so the farther I push it down the faster the motor turns...

Any ideas, any CHEAP ideas?

Thanks in advance, Alan...

Alan,

I have a couple of rubber disks. I even have the aluminum disks that you attach the rubber to. All of them are 8" diameter.

Oh yeah, I believe that the rubber disks are 60 durometer.

You know how to contact me if you want one.

Do you hear that?
That is the sound of inevitability.

Peter Marzitelli uses cork (looked to be about 1/8") glued onto the disk of his sander. He rounds the edge over to give him that nice (what's it called?) plung cut at the choil. (I think I got those terms right).

Wide rubber belting, like off shoulder spreaders and conveyer belts would work fine. I use it to cover the bed floor of my old Ranchero. You can find it from heavy equipment contractors who throw old ones away.

Alan, I was looking for rubber backing for my disc grinder after Barry Jones suggested it woulwd improve use of the disc. I looked up Gaskets in the yellow pages, I found a company that makes gaskets for industrial applications, piping, that sort of thing. They gave me some 9in discs of 1/4 neoprene, works for me.

Okay, I got the rubber part down pat, but does anybody know where I can get a foot control for it? I want to make it somewhat variable speed without going DC...

Thanks for all the help so far!!

Allen, NgraveR makes a foot rheostat, Jantz Supply carries an engraver with it, but they don't have a separate listing for it. Some member should have a phone number or URL for the parent company, sorry I couldn't be more help.

Allen, I did a little searching and found it here www.ngraver.com just what you need for $35. Look under Flex shaft machine and accessories

Al keep in mind that foot controls aren't very practical to use while standing.
I find them quite awkward unless I'm sitting. A plain old dial control might be better.
