I picked this up on the way to work this morning. It's been a personal grail knife of mine since I started my Emerson addiction. This is a vintage 1998 Commander with a sterile blade. It's definitely one of the crown jewels of my collection.

Awesome score, its cool to see how the commanders have evolved over the years.

Was it at a garage sale, because there was no interest in the item you offer the widow of the owner $5.00, and she said only $3.00 because $5.00 would be taking advantage of you.....LOL

That is a good score. The wave looks much smaller than the newer commanders. I like the G10 on the older models. I picked up a 2000 Mach-1 not long ago and it has the smooth G10. There are a few other differences from the newer models too but the smoothness of the G10 is the most noticeable. I have a few commanders but would love to find one like that someday.

The wave feature is much smaller on this model. It also lacks the jimping on the scales near the wave tha the newer ones have. I love the feel in hand if this one even though the G10 is smoother.

When Ernest designed the Commander model, I think it was in the early to mid 90's, initially it had a deployment hole and no wave. As the story goes, the military units didn't like the hole and requested a hook to catch enemy's blades during combat. Ernest designed the thumb disk and blade catch feature and gave it to the SEALS. They then found by accident the blade catch doubled as a pocket opening feature. Thus the wave was born. This is a paraphrased version of the story, there is the full story in a thread here but I couldn't find it.
