Passing it down…. Topside

Had a pretty great experience and thought it might make a good thread. Anybody pass down a knife they consider a family heirloom while alive? To see it be enjoyed? That’s exactly what I did today.

A while back my son wanted to sell his 20CV Griptilian to get some extra cash. Said he really didn’t want to, but needed the dinero. He had bought it new and used it well at his last job for around a year. I couldn’t let all the character he’d built up on it get away, so I bought it from him.

I wanted to make it special, so I ordered some custom scales. They came in today so I asked him if he could put em on for me (he’s much better at it than I am). He had the scales on in no time and it looks great.

I told him about wanting to add my own character to a knife he’d carried, then told him I’d like to give him the same opportunity. I whipped out my beloved Sere 2K and gave it to him. He was shocked. Said he couldn’t take it. I told him “son, I’d really like for you to be able to enjoy this one while I’m topside. I’d love to be able to see it.”

He knows this one as “daddy’s knife” and I’m sure only expected to have it once I was gone.

This experience today was really what this is all about for me. It’s the pinnacle of this hobby IMO. I honestly don’t think I could top how I’m feeling knife-wise.

Any of you pass a knife down “topside” so you’d be around to see it?

That was a great read! I also have handed down a knife topside, for similar reasons. My daughter is my eldest, she's still a kid but I wanted to give her a knife that I thought she would like and she absolutely did. I hope to gift my son his first knife soon too as he's approaching his ninth birthday. Seeing them happy means everything and sharing that happiness with them is the epitome of living a wonderful life. Thanks for sharing brother

Good stuff. Must admit that reading through that made me a bit misty eyed as I think about experiences with my own son.

Haven't experienced anything like that just yet, but maybe some day. I did gift my son a Griptillian for Christmas. He's 21 now, and was into knives from a fairly young age and really before me. Still, he always had cheap knives when he was younger so this was first first knife of a little higher quality. Makes my heart glow when I've watched him pull it out of his pocket to cut something.

I've given my sons-in-law some knives. Only one of my grandchildren is a boy, and none of the others seem interested in blades. I plan to start loading him up as soon as he is a little older. He will also get a couple of my dad's knives. I look forward to sharing these with him, assuming I'm still alive.

I gave me oldest nephew my Covivi McKenna, he is 10. He keeps it here at my place until his younger siblings are a little older. He is 10, and his 9 year old brother told he didn't want a knife yet, not until he was older. Very responsible kids.

Everything I own will go to my niece and nephews.

My kid is still a teenager, and she isn't into knives, yet..... Other than knowing how passionate I am about them.
I Have given away quite a few knives, and it Aways feels pretty great!

I'm finishing up my grinds on a pretty sweet knife I'm making here for my first pass a round Here, and I'm intending on giving it away, Here afterwards.....
Maybe it will be for one of You?
I know that I will get immense pleasure form seeing it used and enjoyed, Hopefully with MANY pictures posted.... Hahha. :D

I gifted my nephew an ornate collaboration piece, (silver mounted with garnets), by Zaza Revishvili and master smith Keith Kilby...

I've gifted lots of knives, but never one like that previously.

(I plan on doing similarly with much of my collection over the coming years.)

Not quite the same, but my best friend is a corpsman. When he enlisted I gifted him my Swamprat RMD, as I wanted to make damn sure he had a good blade wherever he ended up going. He said his Marines always end up eyeing it on his rig and going, "Why do you have such a BIG knife, Doc?" Then he tells them it's for doing a field crikes. 😉
