Passing It On To The Next Generation

Hello guys and gals.

I went out for a hike with my almost 5 year old boy today (he turns 5 in June). He is old enough now that he can carry his own pack and walk the entire hike on his own (within reason of course). He absolutely loves being outdoors! Its a true blessing to watch him soaking it all in; the sounds, the smells, the sights, and the "feeling" of nature excite him more than any tv show, video game, or movie that he has ever seen.

Of course, being an almost 5 year old boy, he is also enamored with "daddy's knives". For obvious reasons, they are still of limits, but I wanted to get him something he could call his own and carry on our adventures. I bought him first knife; a wooden "play-doh" knife to carry in his pocket and presented it to him on the trail. He was so happy he could barely contain himself. He wanted me to take a picture of him with it and his telescope (a Jake and the Neverland Pirates plastic telescope - it doesn't do anything but he swears he can see better with it :) )

At his suggestion, we also took a picture of our knives together. Of course the first words out of his mouth were "look dad! my knife is bigger than yours!"

I just wanted to share this little moment with my fellow knife-nuts. I know you guys would understand how great it was to see this hobby has a future.

At first, I thought this was going to be a "snob" thread about valuable knives; Thursday, I was in my doctor's office reading a Forbes magazine which had a Philip Patek ad whose tagline went something like "You don't really own a Patek, you merely take care of it until you pass it on to the next generation."

But I see you were passing on something of actual real value to your son. I wish you well and I hope you have much more of these experiences to share with each other and enjoy.

Great thread. My son is 2.5. I am already planning for our first camping / backpacking trip together. I cannot wait!

Keep it up, Dad. You are making memories whether you know it or not.

When my son was about that age he became enamored with a Buck folder I carried. He was always wanting to carry it, but being 5 I didn't think it was the best idea. I told him he could have it when he turned 16. He grudgingly agreed, although he still asked to carry it from time to time fro the next 2-3 years. He eventually stopped asking about it- I figured he had forgotten about it. The day before his 16th birthday, he reminded me of our deal. I had to scramble to find it, as it had long since been replaced as my EDC and I had completely forgotten about it. I did find it and gave it to him for his birthday. He still carries it every day, and he is 37.

That is awesome:) my daughter likes to carry around her knife (a folding fork, spoon, and knife camping tool) when we are out and about, and makes sure she puts it away in my knife drawer. It's great to see the next generation will continue our ways!

Cute boy...really a happy lad. Very nice pics and nice memories...
My grandkids are from 12-22 at this point, but I've given them all folders. My 18-yr-old gd-daughter is a college sophomore and loves folders; has a pretty decent collection.

Thanks for the kind words fellas. Definitely a great adventure yesterday with my wingman. I plan on passing my F1 down to him once he is old enough. He has seen it on my belt for all of our adventures so far and I know he will appreciate having a knife from his dad once he gets older. He is a lefty, so I purchased a left hand F1 sheath for him and will hold onto it until the time is right.

It's nice to know others are as fond of passing on the value of knives as I am. My son had his first birthday a month ago and I can't wait to start getting him involved, my plan is to pass on a knife every year once he is old enough to really appreciate fine blades. I will obviously start with lower end stuff and go from there until he is old enough to start his own collection.

I actually just started collecting (only blades I can EDC and actually use) right after my father passed away last year. I was going through his stuff and found really interesting blades he had picked up throughout his life. I think he stopped collecting at one point in his life because I don't remember seeing his collection and when he passed I found them in an old box in his tool shed. He did buy me some knives and I do remember being obsessed when I was 11 o so. He gave me my first blade when I was 10, a Swiss Army (which I still own), and continued to gift me more for the next 3 or 4 years. Something I wish he had done was to educate me about taking care and appreciating my blades, this is something I will definitely focus on with my son.

What a handsome kid. One of my grandsons has recently turned five, the only one who lives close enough for me to see very often... and he is a crazy man. Loves his grandpa's knives. Chomping at the bit to buy him his own (I'm pretty certain I was carrying one in my pocket every day at age eight.)I think It's a family knife loving gene thing. My daughter, his aunt, the pro chef owns numerous high end, Japanese cooking knives and his mom, my oldest daughter, carries at least two Saks every day. I don't think there's any reason to doubt that he will be one of us when he grows up. ;')

Great to see!! I took my daughter on tons of adventures, camping etc... She is now a knife addict too!!
