When my parents visited this year from England I showed my dad how easy it was to make a fire using a ferro-rod. It was my dad and grandad that got me into outdoors stuff but more the enjoyment of nature rather than bush skills.
Anyway so impressed was my dad that he bought a ferro-rod and said he was going to take it and show my little nephew how to use it.

He sent me these pics today~

This was probably a lesson my nephew will now never forget and hopefully one day he will pass it on as well !;)

Very very cool!

on the same topic,we bbq'ed today and
my kid (16) started the charcoal starter with a ferro rod and
fatwood kindling he shaved with his Ray Laconico knife.
his first fire without matches or lighter.

Awesome
Make it fun and interesting , and they learn it fast , and remember it .
These things should be passed on .
Since when tho is playing with fire EVER not interesting ?
