Patching Insboard

I picked up an old NC Forge Whisper Daddy that had been laying in a mud bog in a guy's barn. The shell was in decent condition, and it was cheap, so I bought it.

The Whisper Daddy has a side door on it, and while I was wire-brushing off the rust, I caught a piece of Insboard on the roof, and took a ~ 2" pie slice out of it :(

I have a bunch of Satanite -- can you patch holes in Insboard with Satanite, or will it just fall off?

If I get a couple of scraps of Insboard, can I somehow cut-out a square section around the pie slice and somehow glue a patch piece in?

Thanks!

Robert

I am not sure about this but I think it depends on how large the repair area is.

This is from the former ellis site
Satanite Refractory Mortar:

This refractory mortar works great for sealing the Inswool/Kaowool fibers on the walls of your forge. It can also be used as a clay coating for developing "temper lines" (hamons) on your blades. You can also use it to coat your entire blade to aid in the reduction of scaling during the heat treating process.

So if you are talking about repairing a large or thick area that the insboard has been damaged the Satanite would probably eventually fall from the area. I would try and patch the area by cutting a plug that is slightly over large for the area so it has to be worked into the area. Once you have the patch cut for fit, adheare it with chimmeny caulk and the coat the surface with a thin coat of the Satanite to complete the patch! I think the thinner will stay.

Others may have different advice but that is kind of my take on the situation!

Thanks for the information Dixie! So Satanite is out. Would Mizzou or KO-Lite be any better?

Sounds like I'm going to have to bite the bullet and just get another sheet of Insboard...

I am not sure you can say it is out, I just don't think it is the thing for a larger repair unless you fit the tear out first. You need to go look over the entire site at the former Ellis site. I say former as Ellis is in the process of being sold.

I remember reading about a material that is just for repairs and I didn’t have time today to reread all of that today. Check out the material on castable refactories from the site as this might work better for a larger repair. Pick up the phone and call the new owner he takes over on the 15th of June and explain what your are looking for. he might as well hit the ground running!

OK I don't see a phone number and the info on the site says he is moving the bussines and they are expecting delays through the month of June!

I have plugged spots on my Whisper Low boy.
The last time I had to do repairs, I replaced the entire floor with ramable refractory, and topped it with bubble alumina. I re-lined the sides with satanite, built up in layers. On the door I put in a new piece of insboard, mudded in place with satanite. It has run for several years without any need for repair since that relining.

Hello, this is Wayne Suhrbier. I am the guy taking over from Darren Ellis. Lazlo is there any insboard left in the spot that got damaged or is it down to the shell? If it is down to the shell then I recommend filling it with a piece of insboard or inswool and coating with either satinite or mizzou. Put a thin layer over the damaged spot and let it dry. Then put a layer over the entire roof to tie it all together. It is better to build up thickness with multiple thin layers than with one thick layer.

Turn the forge on its top before you begin. Makes the repair easier.
