Anyone going to see it? All historical inaccuracies etc aside, looks entertaining. I just hope lots of character actors doesn't mean it will be corny. Karl Urban, Russel Means and Clancy Brown are all entertaining in their own right. But, for Means and Brown, their only good movies were Last of the Mohicans and Highlander, well, Brown was good in the Green Mile, but he was a bit player. Urban, well, Doom, I still want my money back from the rental, and Ghost Ship wasn't that good, but that wasn't his fault. Eh, does anyone really want to see Pathfinder?

I can't see how it can possibly be anything but a stinker. THe concept is evil Vikings raiding the poor helpless Native Americans who then get a Viking (naturally) orphan to adopt and raise who becomes their leder in resisting the evil Vikings. This is straight bleeding-heart white guilt taken to its illogival conclusion with horned helmets straight out of a Frazetta fantasy painting as illegitmately mated with the Orcs in Peter Jackson version of Tolkien's "Ring Trilogy." :barf: :barf:

It's just a movie. You'll get over it.

I agree. Judging by what I saw in previews, I don't see it being worth the 10 bucks.

So were "Bowling for Columbine" and various other pieces of **** from Michael Moore. I don't notice an awful lot of folks around here getting over them very quickly.

So "Bowling for Valhalla" would pretty much pee everybody off then? :)

But this isn't a movie by Michael Moore, is it? It's a work fiction and fiction can have the luxury of being over the top and unbelievable (Hmmm, I guess it could be by Michael Moore ;)).

When you are both a history major AND someone who re-enacts the Norse culture, such liberties taken with the history of the Norse paople of that period tend to irritate you. As an enthusiast for Roman history, I was equally distreessed by "Gladiator" and most other "sword and sandal" epics. As a member of the Clan Gregor, I was distressed by the silliness of "Rob Roy". I have gotten more or less used to stupidity in historical films and am very excited when I actually find one that is pretty accurate to its period, such as "Master and Commander" far and away the best iron men in wooden ships(or is that wooden men in iron ships? :) ) film ever made.

Master & Commander was a great film. Although I know nothing of nautical history I thought it was well done.

One of the first questions that popped up on our skeptic's bulletin board when the trailer came out was...Where did they get the horses?

Perhaps the Vikings rowed them over on the longships.....

They ain't no stinkin horses, they're large dogs I tell ya!

When you are both a history major .....

.....and look for any kind of historical accuracy (or anything but entertainment), form Hollywood, you will be frustrated. Of course they can't get it right--they can't get anything right. Sit back and enjoy the ride. If the subject of the film hits a little too close to home (Munich, in my case) then just don't see it.

Of course, Hugh, one needn't take this to extremes--you might end up being limited to romantic comedies for the rest of your film-viewing life.:D

Clancy Brown was in The Green Mile????

Sure you aren't thinking The Shawshank Redemption???

Clancy Brown did a pretty servicable job as a very bad guy in "Shoot To Kill" with Sidney Poitier and Tom Berenger. You had to love how they recruited every character actor that had ever played a memorable movie psycho to play the fishermen so you couldn't figure out who the killer was right off the bat. He was very good in "Shawshank Redemption" to, as was everyone in the cast. Of course we all remember Clancy in his cheesy but kinda cool first major role in "Highlander":D Hoever, i think that there may be some problems of historical accuracy with this new film, [particularly considering that the Vikings got their butts stomped by the local Indians because most of them were farmers.

The Indians did not "stomp" any "butts" because the Quebecois had not yet arrived, puffing away on the great American weed. :)

Wanted to note that one of the members of the CKBC loaned me a copy of the History Channels 300 program. It was very informative, and entertaining, but no where as thrilling as the movie 300. For example, Leonidas died in the first few minutes of the last battle, when the Spartans, AND 1000 OTHER GREEK SOLDIERS, were cornered by the Persian army. In the movie, he saw his troops die, then died under arrows so numerous they blotted out the sun.

So, I recognize that Vikings came to America before Columbus. I had been taught that the native tribes had driven the Vikings out. After looking at the costumes, I realized that this would be a form of entertainment, not a history lesson. I don't know if the actors will give top flight performances, none of them are bad, but they have done camp before, Russell Means was in Natural Born Killers, right? Anyway, Hugh, I understand your trepidations about seeing this movie, but like Ken and others have stated, Hollywood isn't going to make money on a history lesson. As a fellow armchair historian, I am very interested in making it to your viking re-enactment, and would still like to get together in DC to palaver with you. I hope you don't take my words as an insult, but when it comes to these kinds of movies, you gotta lighten up a little.
