I am going to Costa Rica in a few weeks and I have been looking into getting a "survival" knife. I have done a lot of research online and was looking to get a SOG seal pup for a while. I went to a survival site and looked into the area on survival knifes, just to see what they recommend. So I narrowed it down to the ESEE 5, BK2, Seal pup, and the LMFII. I really thought that the seal pup would have been the winner, but I think that it would be more of a fighting knife, so that went out the door. I will still get one for my collection. I really want an ESEE 5, but that is out of my price range for now. I looked into the LMFII cause I really like how they look, but I did not get good reviews as far as reliability and strength, but will probably get one in the future.

So now I am patiently waiting for the winner! It should be in my hand on Friday. I chose the BK2 Because I watched a ton of videos on Youtube and they really beat the sh*t out of it and it takes it all! I really think that I will be very satisfied with this. I am not planning on battoning with it or anything unless I have to, but I will probably use it to crack some coconuts. I cannot wait to get it and I think that I will most definitely look into getting my hands on some of the other bad Beckers. The only thing that I am not too excited about is the sheath, but I think that I can mod that to what I want. This forum has also helped me with all of its useful information. I am glad that I found this place and I will probably spend a good ammount of time on here. Thank you for reading my rant.

Congrats on the score. Doesn't it seem like the mailman take forever when there's something good coming in?

I'd bet the BK2 can rip holy hell through some fresh coconuts. I've been meaning to get a couple coconuts and test it out myself at home.

:thumbup:Good first post

I did the same thing you did about watching vids and reading up as much as possible

the 2 will not let you down!

we will need pics of the 2 in Costa Rica btw

Thank you for reading my rant.

Thanks for writing it. Welcome to the Becker Forum, and Bladeforums, glad you're here.

Good choice. If I may recommend something, if I was going to Costa Rica, I would upgrade to a custom kydex if I was you. That's only a suggestion though. You won't really like that IMP on that monster. Check out the sheathmakers forum, Kiah, Steelnut, CRKS, Marion David Poff, and many, many more, are all here on Bladeforums, worth a look.

Keep us up to date on the trip (if you can) and stop in often. Once again, welcome.

Thanks everyone! I will definitely take pictures of the BK2 in CR. I do not have the best camera or talent, but I will try to make it interesting! I would love to get a new sheath...I really don't have time to do that though. I really do not carry fixed blades on my side ever...I prefer scout carry or inverted. I was looking into the tek lok, but once again do not have time to wait for it in the mail and don't know where to get them. I will however check out the sheath makers and will probably buy on if I like what I see. I am looking forward to a long time with you guys! Thanks for all the hospitality.

Sorry, new to the lingo Moose. What do you mean by IMP?

Don't forget to shoot some video of you shredding coconuts with that BK2! I had problems opening one with a hammer, so now that you mentioned it, I'm absolutely going to the store to buy some fodder.

I was in the same situation as you. Well not exactly....I wasn't on my way to CR but I was into looking for a survival/camp knife. LMFII was in my radar but after all the research I chose the BK2 and then it was downhill from there. Now I have 3 BK2s and a BK7, Desert BK7, BK9, 2 BK10s, BK11 sanmai, BK11 I'm hooked. Careful you may get hooked. One of the main reasons I like more about the BK2 is no serrations. You can sharpen it in the field if need be...and it eats LMFs for breakfast.

Remember to post pics of your BK2 laying into some coconuts :)

I actually just traded my ESEE 5 for my BK2. The ESEE was on m radar since they released the 5, and I finally bought one about a month ago. Great knife, but after using it once, the slab handles drove me to part with it. BK2? Not somuch. Very comfy handles and much less $. Win.

Btw, welcome, brother! Be sure to post pics. Have a good trip.

I will try not to, but I am already addicted to knives and if I find one that I like then I will eventually get more than one. One to use and one to just collect. I really don't want to mess up this BK2, but I want to see what it can do...so I will probably get another one in the near future. I might be a future Beckerhead. I am glad that I found a place where I can learn more about knifes and further my addiction. So far I am very pleased with all the help and how friendly everyone is. I will be on here a lot I think. Thanks again everyone.

When's your trip? And did you pick up the custom kydex like Moose suggested?

I actually leave Monday, so I do no think that I have time to get a kydex, plus I am not sure what I want to get yet. I think that I will just do the paracord mod for now though. I will look into the kydex definitely.

one can buy an ESEE 5 in costa rica for $10-15, as that's where they are made :)

j/k :)

Go ahead and baton some stuff - you won't be messing up the BK2 that way. It's effective and therapeutic! :D

Just checked the tracking number for my BK2 and they say it will be here the 21st now! Damn I hate my luck! It was supposed to be here Friday! I will not be able to take awesome pictures of it chopping coconuts....guess I will have to get them from the store when I get back and improvise. This sucks! I hope that they are wrong and I get it before I leave!

....Well it did not come in, so I guess that I will have to wait until I get back :(. I will have a nice BK2 waiting for me when I get home though.
