I recently acquired an old Western whittler that was supposed to become a user. I imagined that the knife would be used to cut edibles occasionally so I routinely polished up the grimy, dull-looking blades with Flitz. I don't know what I was thinking at the time--maybe it was a fallacious attempt to "sanitize" the blades. (I now know better after searching the archives on "patina").
Since the knife was never intended as an investment piece, does it matter much that the patina was rubbed-out? How much potential corrosion protection and/or bragging points did I lose? I welcome your thoughts on this matter. Thanks
