Patina and micarta

So my scales are almost on but the tang has taken a few hits (1095).. Can I re'patina in vinegar with the scales on without the micarta changing color ?

I put a patina on the exposed tang of my blind horse (in A2) which has micarta scales. I used boiling vinegar and was applying it with a cotton ball so that I didn't need to completely submerge the handle. Worked fine for me! No discoloration or anything (though I suppose I do have to add YMMV just to cover my butt )
