Forgive me if this has already been covered, I am still trying to figure out the search engine...

I just got a couple of stainless Moras for my daughters. They would like to personalize them with a patina, you know, putting their initials, flowers, or some such girlie-type stuff on them.
Will the stainless blades take a patina like the carbon steel ones using mustard or some other medium?
I am down with experimenting and all but would like to draw upon the experiences of you all before I lose a few hours of my life trying.

No, the stainless mora's will not take any kind of patina. To do what you want, you'll have to go with an acid etch.

Or should I just Google it?

Thank you.

I used a strong acid to patina an AUS-8 blade before.

But in all fairness, I have seen stainless knives in buthcer shops patina. Granted, they are cutting meat everyday, but it is possible

I use PCB etchant (ferric chloride) from Radioshack. 16oz for $12. Tutorials at this link. http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Zs3JvnS4sr8
Keep in mind the acid is temp sensitive. Lower temps equal longer etch times. I heat the acid in the bottle to 90 degrees in warm water. DO NOT overheat ferric chloride. Produces caustic vapors. I use ferric chloride for stainless because it is cery forgiving...takes approx an hour to do a decent etch.
This is 440c stainless after 25 min. Only etched several thousandths.

I really recommend testing on a knife you hate with the same blade alloy as the ones you want etched. Also, I have better results using clear fingernail hardener than i do fingernail polish. Hope this helps.
